RTR boys, girls claim fifth at Nangle Relays

PIPESTONE — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton track and field team fielded some quality performances to put together fifth-place finishes in both the boys and girls sides of the Bob Nangle Relays in Pipestone on Tuesday.

As a team, the RTR girls scored 61 points, 7.5 points back of fourth-place Murray County Central. Luverne ran away with the victory with 171 points while Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton and Pipestone Area claimed second and third. Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton also placed eighth and ninth respectively in the ten-team event.

On the boys side, RTR finished with 72 points while TMB and MCC placed sixth and seventh with 62 and 34.5 respectively. Worthington edged past Luverne for the top two spots, 125.5-122.5, while SWC/E took third at 120.5. WWG/RRC finished ninth with 20 points.

Logan Roelofs led the Knights with a pair of first-place finishes in the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters. The senior distance runner set new personal bests in both events, clocking in at 4:49.09 in the 1600 and 10:21.65 in the 3200.

Also coming away with a first-place finish on the boys side of things was Aidan Swenhaugen for TMB. He crossed the line in 23.81 to win the 200 meters while Gage Struchen set a season-best mark of 24.75 to take the bronze. In between, RTR’s Luke Schreurs set a career best of 24.66 to claim a runner-up spot.

The event was one of three PRs on the day for Schreurs, who also won the long jump in 19-01.5 and was the triple jump runner-up at 39-05.

Aidan Swenhaugen also took third in the 100 at 12.06 while Cade Swenhaugen finished fourth in the 400 at 54.27.

Both Swenhaugens also contributed to a first-place finish for the TMB 4×200-meter relay team. With Cade starting with the baton and Aidan as the closer, the team — which also featured Hunter Ostgaard and Struchen — clocked in at 1:36.37.

Bowen Hesse was the WWG/RCC Falcons’ top finisher on the boys side with a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles at 17.58.

Christian Lembke was the pole vault runner-up for TMB at 9-00.

Jumping events were a strong spot for area girls teams. WWG/RRC’s Amelia Sikel won the long jump with a distance of 14-09 while RTR’s Ava Guida set a season-best of 29-09.25 to win the triple jump.

Beyond the top finishers, RTR’s Taya Christensen and MCC’s Brealyn Damm took second and third in the long jump at 13-11.75 and 13-11.5 respectively while MCC’s Jayda Hellewell and Abbygail Overman rounded out the podium in the triple jump at 29-00.5 and 27-10.

MCC’s jumping strengths also translated to the high jump, where Lindsey Hause set a season-best mark of 4-08 to take third place.

Raelynn Schreier had a solid day in the hurdles for TMB. The Panthers eighth grader set PRs in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, claiming second place in the 200 at 54.87 and third place in the 100 at 18.68.

Brylei Schreier came away with a pair of podium finishes for MCC as well, finishing as the 200-meter runner-up at 28.51 and taking third in the 400 meters at 1:06.08. TMB’s Kyli Carter took second place in the event at 1:05.49.

MCC’s Sophia Nelson and RTR’s Autumn Labrune took second place in the 800 and 3200 respectively, with Nelson completing the 800 meters in 2:37.44 and Labrune setting a season-best mark of 14:33.57 in the 3200 meters. TMB’s Marin Knott also took third place in the 1600 meters.

MCC’s 4×200-meter relay team of Brealyn Damm, Jayda Hellewell, Abbygail Overman and Brylei Schreier took second place with a time of 1:58.75.

RTR and TMB are next scheduled to compete at MCC on Thursday at 4 p.m. while WWG/RRC will head to Lakeview at 3 p.m.
