Tigers topple Fairmont 5-0 behind Garcia-Lopez’s 15 saves

MARSHALL — The Marshall boys soccer team showed off its chemistry on Tuesday night by making use of assists on all of its goals in a 5-0 win over Fairmont.

The Tigers needed Worthington to lose or tie its match against New Ulm to keep Marshall in control of its destiny against New Ulm in its search for its first Big South title. The Trojans won 3-0 but Marshall is still poised to perform in the postseason.

Moo Gay had another big day for Marshall, scoring a pair of second-half goals and assisting another. The two he scored — both of which came in the first ten minutes after the break — were assisted by Sabino Us and Jared Hernandez.

“We have the leading scorer in the state right now [Moo Gay]… obviously, the conference teams know him and try their best to defend him, but we always find a way to get him the ball and he does his part and finishes the play,” Marshall head coach Tony Correa said.

Gay also assisted Us’ goal in the final minutes of the match to make the Marshall lead 5-0. Us was a junior varsity player, but Correa said that the team had noticed his development throughout the season and wanted him to contribute to the playoff roster.

In net, goalkeeper Roberto Garcia-Lopez had 15 saves for the Tigers. Correa described Garcia-Lopez as a player who doesn’t require much coaching because he already has a natural feel for what to do in goal, something that shows in standout performances like Tuesday’s.

“I feel like the difference between last year and this year is that… he just shows more interest in being a leader versus last year he was just going with the flow,” Correa said. “This year, with the saves, he’s just doing his job and I think they’re just coming to him naturally. Even though some of them might not be spectacular saves, he’s still making the save and he’s still keeping us in these games.”

Angel Ramon Ramos broke the tie 15 minutes into the match, taking a feed from Jasiel Flores into the back of the net for a Marshall score, while Mason Graven assisted Isaiah Argueta to make the Marshall lead 2-0 at the break.

The Tigers played Fairmont once earlier in the season, taking a lopsided 10-0 win on the Cardinals’ home turf.

Marshall (11-4) will head to New Ulm to take on the Eagles with Big South title hopes on the line. From there, they have bigger goals ahead of them in the section tournament. The seeding and bracket will be announced on Sunday with Marshall having a good chance at earning a home-field game on Tuesday.

Marshall girls 3, Fairmont 1

MARSHALL — Looking to extend its undefeated streak to seven matches, the Marshall girls soccer team scored early and never looked back in its 3-1 win over Fairmont on Tuesday night.

The Tigers and Cardinals had met once earlier this season in Marshall with the home-team Tigers taking a 4-1 win.

After settling for a 1-1 draw in their last match against St. Peter, the Tigers came out looking hungry for a win. Rylee Jacobson and Averi Schneider each scored a goal in the first half, with Anna Kuecker assisting Schneider’s goal, to give Marshall a 2-1 halftime lead. From there, Kuecker scored an unassisted goal of her own after the break to hammer home the game.

Marshall (6-4-4) will host New Ulm for its regular-season finale on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
