Marshall boys earn No. 2 seed in sections

MARSHALL — After finishing its regular season with a 12-4 record, the Marshall boys soccer team has officially earned the No. 2 seed and home-field advantage in the Section 2AA tournament starting tonight.

Marshall finished its season tied for the best record in the Big South. Top-seeded Worthington came out on top of the tiebreaker based on head-to-head goal differential after the teams split their matchups. Marshall won 4-1 at home while the Trojans won 4-0 in Worthington.

The Tigers will open their postseason run against No. 7 Jordan, marking a rematch of last year’s 2AA quarterfinals. Marshall didn’t play the Hubmen this season but eliminated them 3-1 in last year’s tournament.

With a win, Marshall would also host the winner of No. 3 Mankato West and No. 6 New Ulm in the section semifinals on Thursday. The championship will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at New Prague regardless of who the finalists are.

Marshall’s matchup against Jordan will get started at Southwest Minnesota State University tonight at 7 p.m.

Marshall girls earn No. 6 seed

MARSHALL — The Marshall girls soccer team was undefeated for nearly the last month of the season but, due to the draw-heavy nature of the eight-match streak, will settle for the No. 6 seed in the Section 2AA tournament. They’ll open their postseason at No. 3 Mankato West tonight at 6 p.m.

Marshall finished its season with a 6-4-5 record. Their last loss came by a score of 3-1 at Waseca on Sept. 9. Since then, Marshall produced three wins and five draws. Three of those draws were scoreless matches and they shut out their opponent in two of those matches.

The Tigers last faced Mankato West in 2021, falling 6-0 to the Scarlets in the Section 2AA quarterfinals.
