Tigers roll past Trojans 68-6

Prep football roundup Sept. 29

WORTHINGTON — The Marshall football team recorded its second consecutive win by 45 or more points on Friday night, taking down the Worthington Trojans in a 68-6 blowout.

The win comes a week after the Tigers defeated Tri-City United at home 45-0. With these last two wins, the Tigers have a winning record for the first time this season.

Josh Kraft and Mason Eickhoff helped the Tigers get off to a strong start. Kraft converted a QB sneak to get Marshall on the board and Eickhoff ran for a 23-yard touchdown to make the score 14-0 after the first frame.

Worthington scored first in the second quarter but, after their point after was blocked, Mason Eickhoff returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

Eickhoff finished the day with six carries for 37 yards, putting him third on the team behind Gavin Schaefer’s three carries for 24 yards and Austin Martinez’s seven carries for 42 yards.

Kraft then found Tate Condezo for a 12-yard touchdown, the Tigers’ only complete pass of the day, and Coby Brownlee and Gavin Schaefer each ran for a score. To cap off the half, the Tigers safetied Worthington to go into the locker room with a 44-6 lead.

After halftime, Ethan Hess knocked down a 32-yard field goal. He also hit all of the Marshall PATs on the day.

Tyson Louwagie intercepted a pass for a pick-6 for the Tigers and ran for Marshall’s last touchdown of the game.

Marshall (3-2) will try to keep its momentum rolling when it plays host to Class AAA No. 4 Fairmont on Friday.

TMB 34, A/E 0

TRACY — The Adrian-Ellsworth Dragons were no match for the mighty Panthers in their football game on Friday night as Tracy-Milroy-Balaton pulled away early to rout the Dragons 34-0.

TMB has now won three straight games by 30 or more points, two of which have been shutouts.

In their first drive of the game, Trevor Smith was able to cap off a 34-yard drive with a one-yard run for a touchdown. The Panthers would spend plenty of time in the endzone on the night, finding it in each of their first three drives. Of the Panthers’ seven drives, only one — a turnover on downs in the third quarter — was ended by anything other than a touchdown or the clock running out.

In the Panthers’ other two first-half possessions, Taylor Swenhaugen caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Smith and Alex Schuh ran for a seven-yard touchdown to make the score 21-0 at halftime.

Smith threw for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the day. He also ran for 42 yards on eight attempts with a touchdown as well.

Schuh led the Panthers on the ground with 95 rushing yards on 14 carries while Ankrum and Zick led the aerial attack with 61 and 41 receiving yards respectively.

TMB looked just as sharp after the halftime break as it did before it. Smith hit Ankrum with a short touchdown pass on their first drive of the half and, in the fourth quarter, Schuh found the gap for an 11-yard touchdown run to reach the final score of 34-0.

Defensively, Ankrum and Smith each had an interception for the Panthers while Brian Erbes and Dalton Timmerman each had a sack. Swenhaugen also had a team-high five solo tackles, including three tackles for loss.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (4-1) will try to keep the ball rolling when it faces Murray County Central (3-2) on Friday.

Canby 15, LQPV 12

CANBY — Trailing with time running out in the fourth quarter, the Canby football team came together to drive 99 yards down the field against Lac qui Parle Valley to score with under a minute remaining and steal a 15-12 win following a two-hour lightning delay.

Nick Wagner put the finishing touches on the go-ahead drive, keeping the ball for a seven-yard run and following up with a 2-point conversion run to give the Lancers a field goal’s breathing room.

Lac qui Parle Valley trailed by a point at halftime, 7-6, but took the lead with a 17-yard touchdown pass to go ahead by 12-7 to set up the nail-biter finish for the Lancers.

Canby scored the first points of the game in the second quarter behind another big play from Wagner. The quarterback took the ball from deep in Canby territory for an 80-yard touchdown run. Dylan Houseman followed the touchdown up with a successful extra point.

The Eagles scored shortly later, but the LQPV touchdown run was followed by a missed extra point, allowing Canby to retain a slight lead.

Wagner totaled 153 yards on the ground on just 19 attempts on the day. He also threw 10 passes for 69 yards and an interception.

Defensively, Wagner made up for the interception he threw by picking off a pass himself as a defensive back. Blake Hiedeman also intercepted a pass for the Lancers.

Wagner’s eight tackles were second on the team behind Sam Drietz’s nine. Sawyer Verhelst also added in another seven tackles.

The win comes a week after the Lancers lost their first game of the season to top-ranked Minneota, 28-6. Still, after bouncing back nicely against Lac qui Parle Valley, the Lancers have reason to stay optimistic about their play this season when they head to Dawson-Boyd (2-3) for their next game on Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 1 Minneota 20, MACCRAY 0

CLARA CITY — Even while being held to its lowest point total of the season, the No. 1 Minneota football team still was able to win handily against MACCRAY, pulling away for a 20-0 win on Friday night.

The Vikings did all of their damage in the first half and most of it in the first quarter. Ryan Meagher ran for a pair of long touchdowns, 47 and 44 yards respectively, to help Minneota get out to a quick 13-0 lead. A quarter later, Destin Fier ran for an eight-yard touchdown to cap off the day’s scoring.

Meagher carried the ball just six times in the game but was very efficient with his carries and finished the day with 129 yards on the ground.

Fier also had a pair of carries for 15 yards and picked off a pass on defense while Lucas Rybinski and Max Rost each had a 10-yard run.

Sawyer DeSmet accounted for all of the Minneota receiving yards, catching a pair of Ryan Dalager’s five passes for 35 yards. Dalager also threw a pair of interceptions on the day but the Vikings’ ground production was enough to overcome the lost turnover battle.

Parker Bradley led the Vikings with five total tackles on the day, including a tackle for loss.

Minneota (5-0) is still yet to win a game by fewer than 20 points. It will look to keep the trend going when it hosts Lakeview (1-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.

MCC 18, St. James 13

ST. JAMES — First-half fireworks were the determining factor in the Murray County Central football team’s matchup against St. James Area Friday night, resulting in an 18-13 win for the Rebels.

While there were no second-half touchdowns for either team in the game, the Rebels’ three first-half touchdowns were enough to secure the win.

Teague Meyer was the first player to find the endzone on the night, rushing for a 14-yard touchdown in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. He finished the night with 18 carries for 133 yards on the ground. He also threw 12 passes for 48 yards with an interception.

The Rebels missed the extra point, allowing St. James to take the lead when they scored a rushing touchdown in the second quarter, but the lead didn’t last long. Ross Engelkes ran for a five-yard touchdown to put MCC back on top despite missing the extra point. Ross Engelkes ran for 100 yards even on the night with 18 attempts.

The one touchdown wasn’t enough for Engelkes; after St. James took a 13-12 lead with a touchdown of their own, Engelkes came back with a 42-yard run to bring the game to its final score of 18-13.

Behind Engelkes and Meyer’s efforts, the Rebels doubles the Saints rushing total, 273-130. St. James’ 116 passing yards gave them an advantage but a Saints lost fumble kept the turnover battle even.

Lucas Kuball was all over the field defensively for MCC, finishing with a team-high 6.5 tackles. Engelkes and Quintin Lewis each contributed another 5.5.

Murray County Central (3-2) will look to break its trend of alternating wins and losses to start the season when it hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (4-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Cedar Mountain 28, RRC 8

MORGAN — The Red Rock Central football team had no answer for Cedar Mountain after the one-hour weather delay on Friday night, allowing the Cougars to score four unanswered touchdowns in a 28-8 loss.

The Falcons last played in a 30-22 win over New Ulm Cathedral on Sept. 15. They were slated to head to Westbrook last Friday for a matchup against Westbrook-Walnut Grove before the Chargers suspended their season due to low turnout and player safety concerns with a young roster.

With Carter Therkilsen out due to injury, Abraham Stavnes took nine carries for 72 yards and the lone RRC touchdown of the game. Quintyn Vold also ran for 66 yards while Isaac Simonson threw the ball 26 times for 65 yards.

Stavnes’ touchdown came in the final two minutes of the third quarter and was followed by a Jayden Lang reception for the 2-point conversion to make the score 28-8. Yet, the game’s scoring came to a halt after the play and the Falcons were unable to make a miraculous comeback.

Red Rock Central (3-2) will head over to Fulda for a matchup against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in their next game on Friday.

No. 8 B.O.L.D. 69, Dawson-Boyd 0

OLIVIA — Coming off a pair of two-possession wins, the Dawson-Boyd football team was unable to get anything going in its Friday night matchup against No. 8 B.O.L.D., falling to the Warriors 69-0.

Stats for the game were unavailable at time of publication.

Dawson-Boyd (2-3) will look to regain some momentum when it hosts Canby (4-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Lakeview vs. YME was postponed due to lightning. The game will be played on Saturday at 4 p.m.
