Mustang golf ends spring trip with fifth place finish at SMSU Classic

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s golf team closed its spring trip on Tuesday afternoon with a fifth place finish at the eight-team, 36-hole, SMSU Spring Classic played at the par-72 Wigwam Resort Blue Course.
SMSU finished the two-day tournament with a score of 85-over-par 661. The Mustangs shot a 41-over 329 during Tuesday’s final round after shooting a 332 on Monday.
NCAA Division I member, Lehigh University, won the team title with a score of 38-over 614. Another Division I school, Bucknell, placed second at 60-over 636, while MSU Denver finished in third place at 61-over 637.
Emily Shimkus from UC-Colorado Springs captured medalist honors in the 55-player field with a 3-over 147 (73-74), finishing one-shot ahead of Yuki Zhu from Lehigh (74-74).
SMSU’s Courtni Frank and Danielle Podoll both shot scores of 19-over 163 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Both carded scores of 7-over 79 on Tuesday with Frank making 12 pars, while Podoll finished with 11 pars.
Ashley Trongard shot an 11-over 83 on Tuesday to finish with a 20-over 164 to place tied for 18th. She carded two birdies and eight pars in the final round. Lauryn Driscoll placed 28th with a score of 27-over 171, while Sally Gallagher was 32nd at 30-over 174. Driscoll had eight pars during the final round shooting a 16-over 88, while Gallagher also shot an 88 and had one birdie and six pars.
Jacqueline Gossen, playing as an individual, closed the final round shooting 13-over 85 with two birdies and four pars to place tied for 25th. Meghan Pundsack and Berkley Steffen also played as individuals with both tying for 46th overall at 40-over 184. Steffen had two birdies and three pars on Tuesday during her round of 18-over 90, while Pundsack had two pars during her round of 23-over 95.
SMSU is scheduled to return to action on April 14-15 at the Augustana Invite in Sioux Falls, S.D., played at Bakker Crossing Golf Course.
