HLOF/WWG looks to send golfers back to state
WESTBROOK — The Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove golf teams will be competing through the 2026 season in hopes of sending another individual to the Class A State Tournament, in addition to being competitive as a team and making strides.
Of the talent returning on the boys side is Neil Kuehl for his senior-year campaign, who was the lone HLOF/WWG golfer out of both teams to earn a berth to the state tournament last season. Kuehl placed 80th individually at the state tournament in his junior year with a 185, but earned his spot at state after carding a 169 in the Section 3A championships to take the last individual qualifying spot.
Dominic Lee also returns for his senior year, and is off to a strong start as well.
HLOF/WWG recently earned a first-place finish as a team at the Red Rock Conference meet on April 23 with a 335, edging out Mountain Lake’s 336.
Both Kuehl and Lee led the team, tying for third place individually, with an 82. Junior Brady Madison also followed in seventh place with an 84, looking to be another core piece for the team this season.
In a dual with Red Rock Central earlier in the season on April 16, to which HLOF/WWG won, Madison led the way in first place after carding a 4-over 40. In the same meet, sophomore Connor Jackels took second with a 42, while Kuehl and Kyle Curry followed in seventh and eighth, respectively. Fellow senior Kellen Hollahan also rounded out the team in 10th place.
The girls team has a handful of older experience as well as they look to continue being competitive, led by senior Ellie Freking. The team also consists of juniors Cadey Brown, Ava Herding and Hannan Post.
The girls team had a positive outing at the Red Rock Conference meet, finishing in fourth place of six competing teams. Brown led the way in 10th place wtih a 97.
In a five-team meet at Red Rock Central earlier this season as well, both Brown and Herding led the team with a seventh-place individual finish after carding a 53, as the two will also look to help lead HLOF/WWG as the season continues.
At the Section 3A Tournament last season, both the boys and girls team did not have enough individual golfers to qualify for a full team.
