MARSHALL — The Marshall boys hockey team stomped out the Trojans on Tuesday night, winning 11-0 in Red Baron Arena. Jett Wing, Isaac Gross and Luke Ehlers each scored their first career varsity goals in the contest.
“For Jett, who’s a senior, to get his first varsity goal, that’s pretty special. Then the two younger guys, just to get that first one is big,” Marshall head coach Michael Weiss said. “It kind of gets the monkey off the back. All three of those goals, it was good to see all the guys excited to see them pitching in.”
While the game was lopsided in favor of the Tigers, they could still get everyone involved on offense. The Tigers didn’t have any repeat goal-scorers for their first seven goals and 10 goal-scorers in total.
Sam Schwarz was the only Tiger with multiple goals in the game. He scored halfway through the first and again near the end of the second. Klayton Weller assisted on both goals.
While the Marshall offense was on fire, the defense was perhaps more impressive. Through two periods, Marshall had allowed one shot on goal. The Tigers finished the game outshooting the Trojans 35-6.
“It just starts in the offensive zone,” Weiss said. “We did a good job controlling the plays so they didn’t get many chances to come down the ice. When they did, our [defense] did a good job skating with them and taking the puck away.”
Gavin Welsh posted a clean sheet on the night, finishing with 35 saves and a pristine 1.000 save percentage
Zach Kramer and Parker Schmitt each finished the night with 3 points on a goal and two assists, while Joey Fossum and Sean Nwaiga also each chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Weller and Chase Mellenthin didn’t find the net themselves but finished with four and three assists respectively.
With 18 points in the Big South standings and two games remaining, Marshall (11-11-1) could still finish anywhere between second and sixth in the conference. Still, they’re building momentum down the stretch; the Tigers have gone 8-3 since Jan. 9.
“We’ve said all year that we have a lot of confidence,” Weiss said. “They come to play hard. If we eliminate some of the mental mistakes and penalties, we feel like we can beat anybody.”
The Tigers will try to put themselves in position for home-ice advantage in the postseason when they host Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato for their final home game of the regular season on Monday at 7 p.m.
