Tigers offense explodes in New Ulm
NEW ULM — The Marshall Tigers crushed New Ulm 56-0 on Friday in a South Central District football game.
With the win, Marshal remains perfect with a 3-0 record, while the Eagles continue to search for their first victory, falling to 0-3.
New Ulm head coach Derek Lieser said that the Tigers were going to be one the best teams the Eagles would play — and he was right.
The Tigers took the opening kickoff and put together a seven-play, 80-yard drive. Quarterback Tyler Maeyaert handed the ball off to Coby Brownlee, who scored on a 7-yard run with 9:33 left in the first quarter. Brownlee ended up finishing with two TDs on the ground and 50 yards.
Ethan Hess kicked the ball for the extra point and Marshall led 7-0.
Three minutes later, the Tigers struck again when Maeyaert handed the ball off to Chidi Nwakama, who ran the ball in for a 7-yard touchdown with 6:01 left in the first quarter. Nwakama finished with 63 yards rushing on five carries.
Hess kicked the ball for an extra point and Marshall led 14-0.
The Eagles got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff. They were unable to get a first down. A New Ulm punt of 53 yards later put the ball on the Marshall 10-yard line.
One example how the football game went Marshall’s way in the first quarter. The ball was on the Marshall 10-yard line and the Tigers fumbled the ball. The ball went forwards, however, and the Tigers’ Andrew Wallen recovered it for Marshall.
That did not faze Marshall as the Tigers scored when Maeyaert hit Salman Osman for a 66-yard strike with 2:12 left in the first quarter. Hess’ extra-point kick made the score 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Maeyaert ended the game with 108 yards passing.
After another New Ulm punt in the second quarter, Marshall engineered a four-play drive which was capped off when Maeyaert handed the ball off to Mason Eickhoff for a 3-yard touchdown run with 10:24 left. Hess provided another PAT for a 28-0 Tiger lead.
The Eagles shanked their punt on their next drive, and the Tigers had the ball again. Maeyaert ran the ball in for a touchdown at the 7:43 mark of the second quarter. Hess successfully kicked another PAT, which made it 35-0 Marshall.
After getting the football back on the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles were forced to punt the ball back to Marshall.
The Tigers got a big 40-yard gain when Maeyaert threw the ball to Omar Abdi, who scored with 4:19 remaining in the second quarter. Hess kicked the ball for a 42-0 lead for Marshall.
New Ulm managed only two first downs for the entire first half.
Marshall scored again on a 10-yard run by Brownlee at the 1:43 mark. Hess’ kick made it 49-0 Marshall at halftime.
The Tigers got their final touchdown on a 1-yard run by Matthew Her with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter. Jamieth Hernandez kicked the ball for the extra point. That last touchdown made it 56-0 Marshall.
New Ulm hosts Luverne for a homecoming match at 7 p.m. Friday, while Marshall hosts Worthington at 7 p.m. Friday.
