MARSHALL — After earning a hard-fought victory against Mankato East, the Marshall baseball team looked to keep its momentum going against New Ulm on Wednesday. MHS would get an early lead, but New Ulm responded with 11 unanswered runs on its way to a 14-4 victory in six innings at Legion Field.

“We just didn’t play well enough [today] to win,” Marshall coach Chace Pollock said. “It was an ugly game.”

Marshall jumped out to a quick start, getting a leadoff double by Tyler Maeyaert before back-to-back RBI doubles from Connor Neubeck and Charlie Jacobson and an RBI single by Lincoln Graven made it 3-0 after one.

But New Ulm was in command from that point on. The Eagles would strike in each of the next five frames, getting back-to-back doubles to plate a run in the second before loading the bases twice in the third and capitalizing on a wild pitch and an error to make it 4-3 after three. New Ulm wasn’t done there, loading the bases after a hit by pitch, single and an error before a sacrifice fly made it 5-3. The Eagles then connected on a three-run triple to push their advantage to 8-3 after four.

New Ulm kept up the offense in the next at-bat, using a trio of hits to plate three runs and make it 11-3. Marshall would get consecutive doubles from Graven and Talan Plante to draw the deficit to 11-4, but the Eagles answered with an RBI single, an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly to bring it to the 14-4 final.

Maeyaert led Marshall with three hits while Jacobson and Graven each added two hits and an RBI and Neubeck and Plante each had a hit and an RBI.

Maeyaert also took the loss on the mound, going 3 2/3 innings while allowing eight runs on four hits and struck out three. Jacob Eben tossed the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out two.

Up next

Marshall (9-7) will face Pipestone Area at home today at 5:30 p.m. Going into their next matchup, Pollock said they need to play better on the defensive end.

“It’s pretty glaring, we’ve got to play better defensively if we want to win and have a good season,” Pollock said.
