Quinn throws no-hitter in series vs. UMD
DULUTH — Jameson Quinn threw the Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team’s first no hitter since 2014 on Saturday, leading the Mustangs to a 1-0 win over Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. Yet, the Bulldogs got the best of SMSU in the latter two games of the series, downing the Mustangs 4-0 and 7-5.
Quinn’s no-hitter was the ninth in program history for SMSU and the first since Joe Axelson’s against Bemidji State on March 12, 2014. Quinn struck out six batters while walking one in the seven-inning victory.
Josh Berreth hit a solo homer for the game’s lone run and SMSU’s lone hit of the win.
Cody Wichmann took the loss for SMSU in Saturday’s second game while Tyler Nesheim took the loss on Sunday.
SMSU drops to 20-26 overall and 10-24 in NSIC play with the losses. Its conference record leaves SMSU in 13th place out of 15 teams, eliminating it from postseason contention with two games left on the schedule.
The Mustangs close out the regular season by hosting Augustana on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
SATURDAY
SMSU 1, UMD 0
Quinn’s lights-out pitching kept the Bulldogs off the board from start to finish, but he didn’t get the run support he needed until the fifth inning when Berreth hit a solo homer to right-center field. The hit made Berreth the only player all game to reach base for the Mustangs.
Henry Wilkinson was one at-bat shy of a perfect game for the Bulldogs, striking out eight Mustangs while giving up one earned run on one hit over seven innings.
UMD 4, SMSU 0
While Duluth’s pitching wasn’t able to fruit a win in the first game, the Bulldogs continued their mound efficiency in the second game. Caden Klebba was two outs away from a complete-game shutout, limting SMSU to three hits with six strikeouts over the first 8 1/3 innings. Joe Gizzi got the final two outs while giving up one hit.
Wichmann had a strong start for SMSU in the loss, giving up one earned run and two unearned runs over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven batters while giving up six hits and a pair of walks. Dylan Webb also gave up an earned run on two hits over 2 1/3 frames of relief.
Duluth took the lead when Michael Gabbard reached base on an error in the third. The Bulldogs scored another pair of runs in the fifth, one coming by a Bulldog stealing home as SMSU tried to prevent another runner from stealing second, and the second run coming on a passed ball.
Levi Lampert, Brock Woitalla, Connor Davis and Lane Moline were the lone mustangs with a hit in the game, all singles. Berreth was the only Mustang to reach base multiple times, walking twice.
SUNDAY
UMD 7, SMSU 5
The Mustangs held a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh of Sunday’s game, but the Bulldogs rallied late to hand SMSU a loss. The Bulldogs started the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, and a two-run double by Henry Bushey gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead. Hayden Anthony also added an RBI double in the eighth to give UMD an extra bit of insurance.
Facing a 2-2 tie in the sixth, SMSU took the lead on a Lane Moline ground out to score Tyler Froland. Carter Lang added an RBI double to score Davis in the seventh and Berreth scored Jacob Merrill on an RBI single to bring the gap to 5-2.
Nesheim gave up six earned runs over 6 2/3 frames in his start, striking out a pair of batters while allowing 10 hits and a pair of walks. Lincoln Vasgaard also gave up one earned run on three hits while getting two outs, and Ryan Dalager retired each of the two batters he faced.
UMD scored a run in the top of the first, but a Moline RBI triple and a Woitalla RBI single gave SMSU the lead in the second before Duluth got the run back in the third.
Davis reached base three times for the Mustangs, all on walks. Lampert also logged a double and a single, and Woitalla got a pair of singles.
Blake Eiden earned the win in relief for Duluth, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts on a hit and a walk. Pascal pitched the first six innings while giving up three earned runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
