SMSU ATHLETICS: SMSU Esports prepares for postseason Valorant tournament

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State Esports team opens its postseason Valorant tournament on Monday, April 18, after a dominant regular season.

The Mustangs went 7-0 in the Emergents Cyan Division, one of nine teams to finish the regular season undefeated. Of the 146 teams in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC), SMSU was the only team to win every single map, going 14-0. The Mustangs also won 182 rounds, while only losing 99 rounds, one of five teams to lose less than 100 rounds during the season.

Valorant is a first-person shooter game in teams of five played in a best of three format, with each game counting as a “map.” For each map, the teams play up to 25 rounds, with the first team to win 13 rounds winning the map.

“I’m extremely proud of the direction this program is headed in only our second season.” Said Head Coach Spencer Louwagie. “We look to continue this domination through the playoffs which comes off the back of the hard work the student-athletes have put in.

The top-seeded Mustangs will take on eighth-seeded Houston Impervious in the quarterfinals on Monday, with action set to begin at 7 p.m. All SMSU Esport matches can be seen on the SMSU Esport Twitch page.
