PREP HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Marshall boys fall to Northern Edge, girls take out Pine City

BLAINE — The Marshall boys hockey team fell to Northern Edge 7-2 in the Herb Brooks Classic on Tuesday.

Marshall got out to an early start, as Gabe Sherman found the back of the net on the assist by Andrew Seanor and Gavin Peterson to make it 1-0 with 14 minutes left in the first period before Northern Edge tied things up at 1-1. Marshall would answer with a goal by Logan Deutz on the assist by Malachi Klemm and Sean Nwaiga to give MHS a 2-1 lead with 5:29 left in the frame, but Northern Edge got a pair of goals to take a 3-2 lead after one.

That was the closest Marshall got the rest of the way, as Northern Edge scored four more times to bring it to the 7-2 final.

Marshall (4-6) will face Winona Cotter in tournament play today at 1 p.m. in Blaine.

Girls hockey

Marshall 3, Pine City 2

BLAINE — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Pine City 3-2 in the Herb Brooks Classic on Tuesday.

Marshall gained an early lead when Olivia Penske scored her first varsity goal on the assist by Regan Loft before Pine City tied things up at 1-1 with a goal with six minutes left in the second period. Pine City would then take a 2-1 lead a few minutes later but Marshall answered with a goal from Kalyn DeVlieger on the assist by Loft to tie things up at 2-2 after two.

After some back and forth play, Marshall took the lead again at 3-2 when DeVlieger scored on a power play with 4:48 left and MHS was able to hold on the rest of the way to cement the win.

Belle Deutz earned the victory in net for Marshall.

Marshall (7-5-1) will face Luverne or Moose Lake today at 11 a.m. in the Varsity Silver Division championship of the tournament at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
