MARSHALL — After a tough loss to St. Peter on the road last weekend, the Marshall football team came back home looking to hit the reset button against Jordan. MHS was able to go toe-to-toe with the Hubmen in the first half, but 20 unanswered points by Jordan after Marshall took a 14-7 lead in the early part of the third quarter proved to be the difference in a 27-14 victory for the Hubmen on Friday at Mattke Field.
Marshall went three-and-out on its first possession and Jordan quickly marched downfield into the MHS red zone, but the Marshall defense came up with a key stop on fourth-and-two from the MHS nine-yard line to turn Jordan over on downs. The Hubmen had another chance to get on the board on its next possession, using a deep pass to move into Marshall territory, but another fourth down stop by the MHS defense kept Jordan from reaching the end zone.
Marshall’s next possession would stall out to start the second quarter, and Jordan took advantage, marching downfield before scoring on an 18-yard run to make it 7-0 with 5:38 left in the first half. Another MHS three-and-out gave the ball back to Jordan, but the Marshall defense quickly regained possession when Tucker Mauch recorded an interception. Marshall would then move into Jordan territory, including converting on a pair of fourth-and-one situations, before Dylan Louwagie found the end zone on a short run with 15.9 seconds left in the first half to tie things up at 7-7 going into the locker rooms.
Looking to use the late first-half momentum to its advantage, Marshall got a strong start to the third quarter when Mauch got his second interception of the game. Tyler Maeyaert then connected with Omar Abdi on a 42-yard touchdown, giving Marshall its first lead of the evening at 14-7. Jordan would have an answer, though, converting on a key third-and-12 before a three-yard touchdown run tied things up again at 14-all.
Marshall was able to get a huge conversion of its own on fourth-and-one from its own 44-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Jordan would come up with a fumble recovery a couple of plays later and capitalized with a 43-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-14 lead. Both teams traded empty possessions, with Marshall’s Noah Wilts coming up with a third interception for the defense, but another three-and-out by MHS led to a Jordan touchdown run, bringing it to the 27-14 final.
