YOUTH HOCKEY: Marshall Bantam A hockey wins District 4 playoffs, earns trip to regional tourney

REDWOOD FALLS – The Marshall Tigers Bantam A hockey team entered the District Playoffs seeded No. 3 out of 8 district teams. On Friday, the Tigers squared off against No. 6 Windom in Redwood Falls and earned a 3-0 victory behind a 20 save shutout from goalie Lincoln Mellenthin. Braxton Meyer scored twice and Wyatt Boerboom chipped in the third goal.
On Saturday, Marshall faced No. 2 seeded Luverne and came out on top with a 10-2 victory. The Tigers had five players each with two goals and one assist – Sean Nwaiga, Jared Reinsma, Braxton Meyer, Tucker Mauch and Wyatt Boerboom. Gabe Sherman also had an assist. Lincoln Mellenthin had 10 saves on 12 shots, while the Tigers put 31 shots on goal.
The Tigers faced No. 4 Fairmont on Sunday. Fairmont beat Worthington and No. 1 seeded New Ulm/Sleepy Eye earlier in the tournament. In this matchup, the Tigers also prevailed with a 6-3 victory. Marshall weathered several penalties and played shorthanded much of the game. Both Wyatt Boerboom and Braxton Meyer tallied hat tricks for Marshall.
The Marshall Tigers Bantam A overall record now stands at 20-12-2. The team earns the No. 1 seed out of District 4 heading into the South Regional Tourney, which is hosted at the Burnseville Ice Center on March 1-3. Marshall Tigers Bantam A will face the No. 2 seed (TBD) out of District 6 on Friday, March 1 at 4 pm.
