PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Individuals compete in the opening round of section wrestling

DAWSON — Friday night marked the start of the Section 3AA Individual Tournament, as wrestlers attempt to qualify for state.

Eighteen area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, including 11 from Marshall, six from United (Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo) and one from Fulda/Murray County Central.

All of the Section 3AA semifinal matchups for Day 2 of the tournament are listed below.

PIPESTONE — Tournament action started on the mat on Friday night, as wrestlers competed in the Section 3A Individual Tournament.

There are 30 area wrestlers who advanced to the semifinals, including seven from Canby, eight from Minneota, nine from Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove and six from Wabasso/Red Rock Central.All of the Section 3A semifinal matchups for Day 2 of the tournament are listed below.

Marshall 52

WASECA — Waseca defeated Marshall 57-52 in the Big South Conference championship game on Friday.

It was a tight game throughout much of the game, as Marshall held just a two-point halftime lead.

Trey Lance led the way for the Tigers with 32 points and 11 rebounds on 10-for-24 shooting. The rest of the Tigers shot just 9 for 35 in the loss.

Just five players scored for the Tigers.

Marshall (22-4) closes its regular season today at Fairmont.

Thomas Hennen led Minneota with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Jacob Hennen added 13 points in the loss, while Logan Sussner finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

Minneota (21-3) opens Section 3A Tournament action on Mar. 3, and will face wither Canby or MACCRAY.

With the win, WWG clinched the Red Rock Conference title for the first time in 20 years, according to coach Derrick Jenniges.

Matt DePrez led WWG with 18 points. Tyson Elzenga added 16 points in the win.

WWG (22-3) travels to Mountain Lake Area on Monday.

SLAYTON — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton defeated Murray County Central 55-33 on Friday, using a strong second-half run to seal the win.

RTR outscored MCC 26-9 in the second half after going into intermission with just a five-point lead.

Westin Kirk led RTR with 19 points. Garrett Kern and Cooper Hansen added 11 points apiece in the win.

Tyler Groves led MCC with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

RTR (25-1) will host Dawson-Boyd on Monday in the Camden Conference Championship, with opening tip set for 7 p.m. MCC (15-8) will open the Section 3A Tournament on Mar. 3 against Red Rock Central.
