To the editor: Not too many weeks ago I remember watching a Marshall School Board meeting and Russ Labat appearing to express concern for the safety of children crossing streets near a school. I find it somewhat ironic that he doesn’t seem to realize how important an affirmative vote on the referendum is to the quality of the instruction once those children arrive safely in those schools. To the editor: It is not name calling to say someone is a Nazi when they act like a Nazi, anymore than it is to say a forklift driver is a forklift driver. Nazism is defined by intense nationalism, anti-intellectualism and dictatorial rule. Would anyone say those characteristics are not those of Trump? To the editor: Since my last letter to the editor, I’ve had a chance to continue to review the information that was sent to me by the director of finance at Marshall Public Schools. One of the things that I found out is that our local district is paying 100% of health and/or dental insurance for 22 individuals. These individuals include the superintendent, principals, assistant principals, administration support and district office employees and do not include teachers in MEA. To the editor: The upcoming school referendum requires voters to either vote in person or request an absentee ballot. There are at least three precincts that are mail-in voting — Fairview, Lake Marshall and Grandview townships. Voters in those precincts will need to request an absentee ballot or vote in person. Yes, we’ve all been here and seen them many times. However, it’s time to talk about them. Talk about what? The absolutely amazing colors of fall. Growing up on a farm, the colors that welcomed autumn were mostly light tan and brown. Those were the colors our surrounding grove treated us to as the temperatures went lower, lower etc. There were a few maples that honored us with red colors, and some sumac that enjoyed showing off their red fall leaves after a long season of green. To the editor: A recent letter to the editor advocated mining rare earth metals vital for electronics and solar products just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area because China has now restricted rare earth metal exports to the US in response to Trump’s tariffs. The BWCA is the largest wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades with over 1200 miles of interconnected lakes.
