Small appliance disposal

It is important to know where to dispose of items properly. There are costs involved for some things and other things are free to dispose of as long as they are disposed of in the correct place. Please remember to place only paper, cardboard and empty clean food containers or personal care containers into recycling. Residents can recycle plastic resin codes 1, 2 and 5 but only if it is an empty food container or personal care container such as a shampoo bottle. All other plastic items are trash only!

We frequently receive questions about small appliance disposal. These would include vacuum cleaners, toasters, blenders, coffee machines, hair dryer, mixer, paper shredders or box fans for example. All of these items are trash only. Large appliances which include microwave ovens, washers/dryers, water coolers, window air conditioners and the like need to go to the Lyon County Landfill which is located off of Highway 23 between Russell and Lynd. There is a cost to bring these items there and residents need to bring along someone to help unload the items please.

Electronic items can go to the landfill or the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Marshall. There are costs involved for some items and others are free. It is against the law to throw electronic items into the trash. The landfill has a storage building for these items that keeps them safe until they are picked up by a certified electronics recycler. An example of these items are televisions, computer systems, DVD players, VCR players, dish receivers, and tablets. Goodwill can also take certain electronic items. Please call them before you go. As an aside, video (VHS) tapes of any kind are trash only. Residents could potentially recycle them through a company in Sioux Falls and if you are interested, please call our office.

Tires should also go to the landfill facility and, yes, there is a cost to dispose of them there. We recycled over 200,000 tires in 2022. Tires do not go into the landfill but we have a collection point at the landfill for tires.

Books, shredded paper, needles (must be in a sharps container like what you would see in the doctor’s office), car seats, rigid Styrofoam and clean, bedbug free mattresses can come to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility during office hours. These items cannot be left sitting outside our facility. Either soft covered books can come to the Environmental office or they can go to one of the thrift stores. The Environmental office can take encyclopedias or textbooks, which we will take at the facility in Marshall.

Metal items that are no longer wanted or needed can go to Alter Metal. This may include grills, garden metal items, bed frames, bikes without tires, and the like. Alter Metal can give you assistance if you call them ahead of time on what they can and cannot take. There is also a metal box located at the Lyon County Landfill.

The Household Hazardous Waste facility take unwanted paint, household cleaners, yard and garden chemicals, Christmas lights and other cords, cellphones, and certain chemicals from farmers. Please call ahead for details of this program for farmers. The landfill, starting June 1 and going through Aug.31, can take empty, triple rinsed Ag chemical jugs. The labels must also be removed along with the caps. Businesses must call ahead and talk to an environmental department employee before bringing items to the Household Hazardous Waste facility.

Alkaline batteries can be thrown away into the trash. Any rechargeable batteries whether they are a button battery, double A battery, rechargeable drill battery or similar should come to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility free. Rechargeable batteries can start fires if broken open.

Residents can call ahead to ask questions before bringing items to any of the places mentioned above. If you do not have a way to haul certain items, you can also contact your local waste haulers for assistance.

The Lyon County Landfill is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 4pm and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until noon. Residents must have all transactions completed by closing. The telephone number for the landfill is (507) 865-4615. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and one Saturday a month with the next Saturday opening on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The telephone number for the Household Hazardous Waste Facility is (507) 532-1307.
