Thank you firefighters

To the editor: The Marshall Fire Department had a drill that they call “I smell smoke.” When they are coming back from a call, anyone can say “I smell smoke.” The truck stops and they pull hose to the structure, both to the front and the back. They are getting trained on the tactical approach to attack the fire at the structure. I had them pull up to my house and do the drill. I watched it. It was a learning experience for me on the new techniques that they are training with. I am proud of their commitment to be prepared. The community should also be proud of their ...

Putin may be using fleeing men to take land

To the editor: Has it occurred to anyone that the mass migration of young men to Finland, Georgia, etc., is Putin’s sly way of taking over property with out firing a shot? Too, if a great many are flowing into Europe, think of Putin’s advantage if he decides to escalate the war. Have you noticed on the news that the Russian authorities are not preventing the men from leaving? This scene is very peculiar. E.J. Johnson Balaton

Time to fix the leadership problem

To the editor: In 21 months the Biden administration has taken a robust economy and has quickly driven it in the ditch. Adding insult to injury the Democrats have control of both houses of congress. Obviously we cannot change our “leader” for another two years but we can change congressional seats to the red column. You cannot fix a problem if you keep voting the same way. State wide we have a similar problem at the top; daycare fraud, $250 million in food fraud, crime and questionable leadership in times that require swift action to keep cities and a police station from burning ...

United Way campaign underway

To the Editor:  I’m extremely excited to be sending a letter to the editor about something I really care about, and that is the United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN). My wife Shana and I moved to Marshall in 1994 and raised two great kids Sadie Zahrbock Schaeffer and Simon Zahrbock, and we are proud to call this area home. I believe that I have a good grasp and understand the needs of my neighbors and I want to continue to help where I can.  I, like many of you, want to help make this a better place to live today and into the future, so please join me in supporting UWSWMN in ...

Support our schools, ‘grow our own’

To the editor: I’ve seen the value community partnerships bring to our schools throughout my years working for the city of Marshall. In that same spirit, the referendum seeking to reinstate an operating levy for our school district represents a big opportunity to make important investments to help our students find success. On. 8, voters will decide whether to approve an operating levy of $675 per student. If approved, the operating levy would stabilize the district’s finances and protect essential student services in the face of rising costs, inadequate state funding, and ...

Fischbach failed to earn my vote

To the editor: Rep. (Michelle) Fischbach voted against the peaceful transfer of power even after the violent attack on the Capitol and the police officers defending it on Jan. 6. Last week, Fischbach voted against the Electoral College Reform act which will prevent future attempts against the peaceful transfer of power. She continues to support that position by selling offensive merchandise on her website.
