Hwy. 19 utility work makes progress
MARSHALL — Construction work to replace water and sewer mains is making progress on East College Drive between Main and Marshall Streets, representatives of R and G Construction said this week.
“This past week, we really made hay. We got most of the water main in, and most of the sanitary sewer in,” said Erika Coudron of R and G Construction. “Hopefully we’ll have all the water main and sanitary done by the end of the day (Friday), and then right away Monday morning we’ll start cranking out storm sewer.”
At an informational meeting Thursday, Coudron went over updates on the ongoing reconstruction work on Highway 19 (College Drive) between Main Street and West Marshall Street. East College Drive will remain closed between Main and North Third Street while construction is taking place.
Coudron said replacement of storm sewer lines will start near the intersection of East College Drive and West Marshall Street, and work toward the Main Street intersection. Once storm sewer work is finished, construction crews will be working toward returning the street to a gravel surface. At that point, it will be decided whether crossings of East College Drive will be re-opened.
“We still have to discuss with MnDOT exactly what they want open,” Coudron said.
In addition to the work on East College Drive, utility work is being done by utility owners this week in the alley behind the Marshall Smoke Shop, Coudron said.
While the intersection of Main Street and College Drive remains open, the intersections of West Lyon Street, West Redwood Street and West Marshall Street are all closed. Alleyway access to College Drive in the construction area is also closed. At the same time, the Addison public parking lot downtown remains open.
Coudron said College Drive remains open to local traffic between North Third Street and Bruce Street.
Some of the discussion at Thursday’s meeting covered changes that will be made to traffic flows downtown as a result of construction. Coudron said the traffic light at the intersection of College Drive and West Lyon Street will be removed, and stop signs will be placed on West Lyon Street. While there will no longer be a stop light, there will be a pedestrian crossing with a flashing beacon on East College Drive, at the corner near Anytime Fitness.
Coudron said construction will also change the traffic flow at West Marshall Street. The West Marshall Street intersection will become a right-in, right-out intersection.
