Probate hearing held for Marshall stabbing victim

MARSHALL — A probate hearing regarding the estate of a Marshall woman killed in a domestic violence incident in December was held in Lyon County District Court Wednesday.

Representatives of Habitat For Humanity of Redwood River and a family member of Meredith Martell were present at the hearing, court records said.

Martell, 35, died Dec. 17, after being stabbed at her home in Marshall.

In April, HFH of Redwood River filed a petition asking for the court to rule that Martell died without a will and to determine her heirs. The petition also requested that HFH of Redwood River be appointed as the personal representative of Martell’s estate.

At the time of her death, Martell and her family were living in a home that HFH of Redwood River moved to Brussels Court in Marshall.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Martell’s daughter Mercedes Martell asked that she be named personal representative of her mother’s estate instead of HFH of Redwood River. A judge directed Mercedes Martell to file an objection or counter petition by June 10.

A future hearing date was set for June 27 to discuss the petition, court records said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
