What to expect on election night
Photo by Deb Gau Printouts from voting equipment are checked during a public accuracy test at the Lyon County Government Center on Friday. The test checks to see that electronic voting equipment is working and correctly tabulating ballots. In Minnesota, counties and cities must hold a public accuracy test within 14 days of every election.
MARSHALL — Lyon County residents will be heading to the polls Tuesday to vote in congressional, state and local elections. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at a total of 12 locations in Lyon County.
Polls will open in the cities of Balaton, Cottonwood, Marshall, Minneota and Russell. The townships of Clifton, Monroe and Lynd will also have physical polling locations this year. The Lyon County Auditor/Treasurer’s office at the Lyon County Government Center will be the polling place for mail ballot precincts.
Preparations for Tuesday’s election started weeks in advance, said Lyon County Auditor/Treasurer Aurora Heard. The auditor/treasurer’s office has also been busy with the number of early and absentee votes being received this fall. By Nov. 4, a total of 2,293 ballots had been received and accepted, Heard said. More than 900 of those ballots had been received over the past two weeks.
“It has been really busy,” Heard said.
Another important task for the county auditor/treasurer’s office was to test that electronic voting equipment was working properly and accurately. In addition to conducting preliminary accuracy tests, the auditor/treasurer’s office held a public accuracy test Friday at the Lyon County Government Center. During the public accuracy test, a set of test ballots with predetermined results were scanned by county voting equipment. Then, workers checked the machines’ tabulations to see if they matched the test results.
This year, Lyon County residents will also be able to follow along with the election results online, Heard said. The county will be using an Election Night Reporting application to share results as they come in on Tuesday night. People interested in seeing election night results can go to the Lyon County website, www.lyonco.org, after 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Where do I vote?
The Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office has an online polling place finder that can help members of the public find where they should vote. The polling place finder is available at https://pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us.
A total of 11 voting precincts in Lyon County have in-person polling places this year. They include the Balaton Community Center for the city of Balaton; the Cottonwood Community Center for the city of Cottonwood; the Red Baron Arena for Marshall Ward 1; Marshall Middle School for Marshall Ward 2; the Marshall Area YMCA for Marshall Ward 3; the Minneota Community Center for the city of Minneota and Nordland and Westerheim Townships; the Russell Community Center for the city of Russell and Island Lake and Lyons Townships; the Veterans Memorial Center for the city of Tracy, the Clifton Township Hall for Clifton Township; the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum for Monroe Township; and Lynd City Hall for Lynd Township.
A total of 18 townships and cities in Lyon County opted to have mail-in ballots this year, the county auditor/treasurer’s office said. The auditor/treasurer’s office, located on the second floor of the Lyon County Government Center, is the polling place for these precincts.
Mail ballot precincts in Lyon County for this election include the cities of Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Lynd and Taunton; and Amiret, Coon Creek, Custer, Eidsvold, Fairview, Grandview, Lake Marshall, Lucas, Rock Lake, Shelburne, Sodus, Stanley and Vallers townships.
What’s on the ballot?
Tuesday’s election include races for U.S. Congressional District 7, Minnesota state legislators and state offices including judicial offices, governor and attorney general. There are also county, city, township and school district elections taking place.
In addition to choosing new representatives, voters in the Marshall Public School district and the city of Russell will each have additional questions on the ballot. MPS is holding an operating referendum, and is asking voters to weigh in on raising the school district’s general education revenue by $675 per pupil.
The city of Russell is asking voters if the Russell City Council should be allowed to issue on-sale licenses for the sale of liquor on Sundays.
