MARSHALL — Work to resurface public parking lots in Marshall’s downtown area is continuing this week — although it may be a little while yet before the parking spaces in the lot at the corner of West Lyon Street and Fourth Street are usable again.
Crews were putting in new concrete at the Baldwin parking lot on Wednesday.
“We expect the contractor to finish pouring concrete tomorrow, and then it needs to cure,” said Marshall Public Works Director Jason Anderson. Anderson said work on adding striping and signage to the lot would start next week.
Construction on the Baldwin lot began Oct. 5, with the old concrete paving being torn out.
The city of Marshall has been resurfacing parking lots along Lyon Street, one at a time, over the past year. Pavement work on the parking lot located behind the Wooden Nickel and Marshall Decorating Center was completed over the summer. Anderson said the Addison parking lot, which is located across Lyon Street from the Marshall 6 theater, will need to wait a little longer for updates.
The city had originally planned to resurface the Addison lot this year instead of the Baldwin lot, Anderson said. However, parts of the parking lot updates would also affect the city’s planned reconstruction of Lyon Street and Third Street downtown. For example, he said, the city would need to plan for curb and gutter work. The number of driveways leading into the parking lot will also be reduced, he said.
Work on the Addison lot will be postponed until next year, to go together with the Lyon Street construction, Anderson said.
