Marshall annexation request takes step forward

MARSHALL — A request to annex roughly 80 acres of farmland into the Marshall city limits didn’t raise any objections at a public hearing this week.

Marshall City Council members went on to approve the request at their Tuesday meeting, but it will also take action from Fairview Township before the annexation is complete.

The land being considered for annexation is located east of North Seventh Street and south of Lyon County Road 33 in Marshall. The property is owned by Western Minnesota Municipal Power, a corporation that finances construction for electrical projects for Missouri River Energy Services.

MRES plans to build a solar installation on the land, which would generate electricity for Marshall utility customers.

Annexing the property requires action from both the city of Marshall and Fairview Township, said Marshall City Attorney Dennis Simpson. Both the city and the township needed to hold public hearings on the request. If both the city and the township approve annexation, the two governments would need to sign a joint resolution. That resolution would then need to be submitted to the state’s Boundary Adjustment board.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Marshall City Engineer Jason Anderson said he didn’t think the city had any deferred assessments for North Seventh Street that would affect the property.

Council members voted in favor of approving the annexation request, and authorizing city officials to sign the joint resolution.

Starting at $3.95/week.
