MARSHALL — A longtime Main Street business will be closing up for good at the end of the day. A message posted on the door of the Thrifty White Pharmacy in Marshall said its last day of operation would be today.
Thrifty White employees said Monday that pharmacy customer files would be transferred to the Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Marshall effective Wednesday.
A printed message on the store’s front door said, “We would like to thank the Marshall community for allowing us to serve you for so many years.”
“They have been kind of a fixture downtown for many years,” Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Gruhot said of Thrifty White. The Chamber has offices next door to Thrifty White, and the business receives a lot of foot traffic, Gruhot said. He thought the news that the pharmacy and store was closing might be disappointing for local customers.
Thrifty White has had a presence on Marshall’s Main Street for more than 25 years. Thrifty Drug, one of the two companies that now form Thrifty White, opened a store on Main Street in 1993, said James Carr of Carr Properties in Marshall. The building where Thrifty White operated was once a movie theater, and over the years it had also been home to a few different drug stores, Carr said.
Thrifty White was formed by two companies, White Drug Enterprises and Thrifty Drug Stores. Thrifty Drug was founded in 1957, and had its first store in Brainerd. In 1985, Thrifty Drug acquired White Drug, which was founded in 1884 in Jamestown, N.D. Thrifty White is headquartered in Minnesota, and currently has more than 80 locations in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Iowa and Wisconsin.
