Filing period closes for some MN elections
2 Lyon Co. commissioners, sheriff running unopposed
MARSHALL — The filing period for Minnesota state, federal and some local elections closed Tuesday.
According to filing information posted on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website, there will be some crowded primary elections for races in Minnesota state government and the U.S. Senate. In Lyon County government, officials like the sheriff and two commissioners will be running unopposed, according to the filing data.
Minnesota will hold primary elections on Aug. 11. The candidate filing period for positions that don’t have a primary, including township, city and school board elections, will be July 14-28.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s candidate filing website said current Lyon County Commissioners Thomas Andries and Paul Graupmann are running unopposed for re-election. Andries represents Commissioner District 1 in Lyon County, and Graupmann represents Commissioner District 3.
Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen has filed for re-election, as has Lyon County Attorney Abby Wikelius. Both are currently running unopposed.
There are also two Lyon County Soil and Water Supervisor positions that will be up for election this fall. As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Allen Deutz had filed for Soil and Water Supervisor in District 2, and John Lanoue had filed for Soil and Water Supervisor in District 4.
At the state level, there are several seats in the Minnesota Legislature that are up for election, after current legislators said they would retire at the end of their terms. In state Senate District 15, Republican candidate Braxton Seifert and DFL candidate Andrea Boettger have filed for Sen. Gary Dahms’ legislative seat. In Senate District 21, Republican candidate Chris Knoll and DFL candidate Caitlyn Sanow-Minett are running for Sen. Bill Weber’s seat.
In Minnesota state House District 15A, Republican candidate Bradley Hennen and DFL candidate Nathan Schmig have filed to run for current Rep. Chris Swedzinski’s legislative seat. In House District 15B, Republican candidate Geri Theis and DFL candidates Keith R. Klawitter and Lydell Sik are running for Rep. Paul Torkelson’s House seat.
In state House District 21A, Republican candidate Krist Wollum and DFL candidate LS Rusty Nelson are running for current Rep. Joe Schomacker’s legislative seat. In House District 21B, Rep. Marj Fogelman is running for re-election as a Republican candidate. Her challenger will be DFL candidate Jon Wilson.
In some of the high-profile races in Minnesota state government, U.S. Congressional and U.S. Senate seats, there were more filings recorded by the Secretary of State’s Office.
The candidate filing website showed several Republican and DFL candidates running for U.S. Senate. In addition to Republican-endorsed candidate Adam Schwarze, Republican candidates who filed for the office included Bob Carney Jr., Cynthia Gail, Ahmad R. Hassan, Joyce Laney, Patrick Munro, Mohamed Muse, Michele Tafoya, Tom Weiler and Royce White.
In addition to DFL-endorsed candidate Peggy Flanagan, Democratic candidates who filed for Senate include Angie Craig, Kurt Michael Anderson, George H. Kalberer, Peter John Murgic and Billy Nord.
In Minnesota’s Congressional District 7, which includes almost all of western Minnesota, U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach is running for re-election in Congress as a Republican. DFL-endorsed challenger Erik Osberg has filed in CD 7, as well as DFL candidate Steve Carlson.
In Congressional District 1, which stretches across southern Minnesota and includes Rock, Nobles and Jackson Counties, U.S. Rep. Brad Finstad is running for re-election as a Republican candidate. In addition to Finstad, Gregory A. Goetzman and Oliver R. Morlan have also filed as Republicans, according to the Secretary of State website. Only one DFL candidate, Jake Johnson, filed in CD 1.
Several Republican and DFL candidates filed for Minnesota governor and lieutenant governor. Republican-endorsed candidates Kendall Qualls and Brian Nicholson filed for governor and lieutenant governor, as had Republican candidates Loner Blue and Andrew Maass, Lisa Demuth and Ryan Wilson, Raul J. Estrada and Joe Kincaid, John Krhin and Dennis Conn, Mike Lindell and Phillip C. Parrish, and Ross Nova and Kerry Busby.
DFL-endorsed candidates Amy Klobuchar and Ben Schierer filed for governor and lieutenant governor, as did DFL candidates Bill E Gates, Jr. and Leah Harris, Tim Holden and Ronald Adams, Kobey Layne and Paul Ference, Ole Savior and Ashley Johnson, Po Vang and Mark Frascone, and Mohammad Wazwaz and Murad Alshool.
Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon filed for re-election, and will be facing Republican candidates Tad Jude and Wendy Phillips. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed for re-election, and other candidates filing for the office include Republican candidate Ronald J. Schutz and DFL candidate David J.S. Madgett.
The list of filings for Minnesota State Auditor included Republican-endorsed candidate Nate George, DFL-endorsed candidate Zack Filipovich, and Republican candidates Will Finn and Scott Jensen.
