Hinckley gets prison sentence for 2019 arson
MARSHALL — A man convicted of setting a fire that destroyed a rural Lyon County home in 2019 was sentenced to more than four years in prison on Wednesday.
Tyson Joe Hinckley, 36, was also ordered to pay restitution during sentencing Lyon County District Court.
In February, Hinckley was convicted of first degree arson, second degree burglary and motor vehicle theft.
In July 2019, responders found Hinckley at the scene of a fire that gutted the home of Tom and Julie Sando in Stanley Township. Hinckley had broken into the attached garage and started a fire inside. Hinckley had also tried to drive away in a van belonging to the Sandos, which became stuck in a nearby field.
At trial, Hinckley testified that he believed law enforcement were looking for him, and had started a fire intending to make smoke to get attention and help from firefighters.
On Wednesday, Hinckley was sentenced to 58 months in prison for the first degree arson charges. He was also ordered to pay a total of $508,363 in restitution.
For the charges of second degree burglary and motor vehicle theft, Hinckley received a stayed prison sentence and a sentence of 90 days in the Lyon County Jail. He also received five years probation for the burglary and auto theft charges, with conditions that he not use alcohol or drugs, and pay restitution.
