MARSHALL — A man charged in connection with a 2019 fire that destroyed a rural Lyon County home is on trial this week, according to Lyon County court records.

Tyson Joe Hinckley, 36, pleaded not guilty in 2019 to charges of first degree arson, second degree burglary and motor vehicle theft. On Friday, the court granted a request for Hinckley to waive his right to a jury trial and hold a court trial with a judge, court records said. The trial was scheduled Tuesday through Friday in Lyon County District Court.

A criminal complaint alleges that in July 2019, Hinckley broke into the home of Tom and Julie Sando in rural Stanley Township, and started a fire in the Sandos’ attached garage. The fire destroyed the garage and gutted the house. The criminal complaint also alleges Hinckley stole a van from the Sandos’ property and drove it into a nearby cornfield.

Before the fire, emergency responders in Lyon County had found Hinckley’s own vehicle abandoned in Stanley Township and conducted a search for him.

Trial dates in Hinckley’s case have been rescheduled several times since 2019. Dates in May 2020, September 2020 and August 2021 were all set and then later canceled.

Starting at $3.95/week.
