Johnny Holm Band, Roxbury to play at Sounds of Summer

Submitted photo The Roxbury Band from Minneota will play at the Sounds of Summer on Aug. 22 in Marshall.

MARSHALL — It may be the dead of winter, but a local civic group is thinking about summer. The Sounds of Summer committee has locked in its main act and opening act for the annual festival, which this year is Aug. 20-22.

The popular local musicians Roxbury Band will open for the Johnny Holm Band. Roxbury kicks off the street dance at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, in Marshall.

The committee has had it eye on Johnny Holm for years.

“We’ve reached out to him in years’ past,” said Brock Klaith, Sounds of Summer president. “But he does a lot of shows. He performs all over — Iowa, the Fargo, N.D., area…”

Holm has the energy of a teenager, but has been performing for 50 years.

“Maybe it’s my ADD,” Holm said in an interview with thefmextra.com. “I have attention deficit times 10. I can sort of tell when the energy is lagging, when they need a shot of something new. I’ve always had a good feel for the songs that people want to hear.”

Klaith said with the lineup of Roxbury and Johnny Holm, they are aiming to “keep everyone happy.”

Roxbury is a band from the Minneota-Marshall area, Klaith said.

“They are well-known in the community,” he said.

Band member Todd Sonnenburg told the Independent that they play hits from the 1980s and ’90s.

“That’s kind of our heyday,” Sonnenburg said.

They have played at Sounds of Summer a number of times.

The Sounds of Summer committee needed to confirm Roxbury and Johnny Holm as the main musical acts and then can continue planning.

“We’re just getting into the swing of things now,” Klaith said. “The planning is in the earliest stages.”
