Hearing for Walnut Grove chief continued until August

A hearing for an area police chief charged with soliciting sex with a minor is being continued to a date in late August, court records said.

Michael Robert Zeug, 45, of Walnut Grove, appeared via ITV teleconference before District Court Judge Gregory Anderson on Tuesday, court records said.

Zeug is charged in Redwood County District Court with hiring or agreeing to hire a minor for prostitution. A complaint alleges Zeug tried to solicit sex with a minor online. Zeug was one of three men arrested June 9 after a sex trafficking and prostitution sting was conducted in Redwood County.

Zeug is currently suspended as Walnut Grove police chief, said Walnut Grove City Clerk Paula McGarvey. The Walnut Grove City Council took action to suspend Zeug in a special meeting June 12.

Zeug’s court case was reassigned to Anderson, a judge in Watonwan County, court records said. At Tuesday’s hearing, public defender Cecil Naatz requested a continuance, which was granted by the court. Zeug’s next court appearance, by ITV, is scheduled for Aug. 29. The court said if there is any testimony at that time, the hearing will have to be held in person.
