Palestinian death toll in Israel-Hamas war passes 60,000, Gaza Health Ministry says
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in the 21-month Israel-Hamas war. Israeli strikes overnight killed more than two dozen people, mostly women and children, health officials said. Israel’s offensive, launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, has destroyed vast areas of Gaza, displaced around 90% of the population and fueled a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Experts warned Tuesday that the territory of some 2 million Palestinians is on the brink of famine, as Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of security have made it nearly impossible to safely deliver aid.
Russia kills 27 civilians in Ukraine as the Kremlin remains defiant over Trump threats
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Officials say Russian glide bombs and ballistic missiles have struck a Ukrainian prison and a medical facility as Russia’s relentless strikes on civilian areas killed at least 27 people across the country. The attacks came despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to soon punish Russia with sanctions and tariffs unless it stops the barrages. Authorities said four powerful Russian glide bombs hit a prison in Ukraine’s southeast, killing at least 16 inmates and wounding more than 90 others. In the Dnipro region of central Ukraine, authorities said Russian missiles partially destroyed a three-story building and damaged a maternity hospital and a city hospital ward. Regional authorities said at least five people were killed, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman.
Thailand and Cambodia ceasefire holds despite reports of skirmishes
SURIN, Thailand (AP) — A ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia appears to be holding as tensions linger despite a truce agreement. The Thai army accused Cambodia of launching attacks early Tuesday. But Cambodia denies any firing. Fighting stopped after military commanders from both sides met. They agreed to halt troop movements and establish joint coordination teams. But a Thai government statement late Tuesday reported another clash. The ceasefire was reached in Malaysia under U.S. pressure. It comes after fighting that killed at least 41 people and displaced more than 260,000 others. Analysts warn the ceasefire remains tenuous and politically complicated.
Attack on military base in Burkina Faso kills about 50 soldiers, residents say
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — An attack by an armed group on a military base in northern Burkina Faso has left about 50 soldiers dead, according to accounts by a community leader and a resident on Tuesday. The Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin group, or JNIM, was suspected of carrying out the attack Monday on the base in Dargo in Boulsa province in the northern region of the landlocked West African nation. The two sources, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions from the military, said about 100 militants participated in the attack, and that the gunmen burned and looted the base after the killings.
