Police say 3 killed, 10 injured in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ first mass shooting
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands say three young men have been killed and 10 others injured at a popular nightspot in the British territory’s first mass shooting in recent history. The police commissioner says at least four suspects were involved in the shooting early Sunday on the island of Providenciales. Premier Charles Washington Misick says a lot of recent gang violence seems to be concentrated in the archipelago’s Haitian communities. No one has been arrested. The shooting comes as the archipelago cracks down on illegal immigration. Haitians represent a third of the territory’s population.
Trump says he’s shortening the 50-day deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump says he intends to shorten the 50-day deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a deal that ends the three-year war in Ukraine. His announcement Monday came as the Ukrainian air force said Russia fired another overnight barrage at Ukraine. Trump said two weeks ago he would implement “severe tariffs” on Russia unless a peace deal is reached by early September. Trump said he would give Putin 10 to 12 days from Monday instead. That means he wants peace efforts to make progress by Aug. 7-9. The plan includes possible sanctions and secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s trading partners.
Israeli strikes kill 36 in Gaza, including a mother and newborn, as more aid is allowed in
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Local health officials say Israeli strikes have killed at least 36 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, including a pregnant woman whose baby was delivered after her death but also died. Israel meanwhile eased some aid restrictions after coming under mounting pressure over the spiraling hunger crisis in the war-ravaged territory. Israel announced on Sunday that the military would pause operations in several areas for 10 hours a day until further notice to allow for the improved flow of aid and designate secure routes for aid delivery. Aid agencies have welcomed the new measures but say they are not enough to counter worsening starvation in the Palestinian territory.
Turkey faces a ‘very risky week’ for wildfires as flames also scorch parts of southeast Europe
ISTANBUL (AP) — An official in Turkey says the country faces a “very risky week” for wildfires as blazes across parts of southeast Europe and the Balkans damaged homes and led to a huge firefighting operation that included evacuations. Nearly 100 people face prosecution over the fires in Turkey. Blazes erupted near Turkey’s fourth-largest city Bursa over the weekend. A wildfire also erupted Monday in forests outside the western port city of Izmir where 11 aircraft were helping ground-based fire units and residents battle the blaze. Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli told reporters in Ankara on Monday that “we are in a very risky week.” Blazes were also affecting Greece, Bulgaria and Albania.
