For Tracy photographer, work is all about relationships

Photo by Deb Gau Kyleen Olson showed some examples of her photography at her new studio in Tracy. While she’s mainly and outdoor photographer, Olson said having studio space will allow her to show clients the different kinds of photo prints they can order, as well as doing consultations.

TRACY — When it comes to photography, Kyleen Olson says she has a couple of major passions. One is capturing the special moments in people’s lives. The other is being there for her clients, whether it’s answering their questions, getting to know them, or making a photo shoot fun and comfortable.

“It’s all about the experience,” Olson said.

And now, Olson will have her own physical space to meet with photography clients. Olson had a grand opening for her new studio, Kyleen Olson Photography, on Nov. 26. The studio is located in the former Vast Broadband building on Third Street in Tracy.

Olson said she got into photography around 2008, when her family was living in Colorado. The scenery there was an inspiration, and over time Olson built up both her skills and a photography business. She’s also developed a signature style.

“It took me a long time to find my look,” Olson said. But within the last couple of years, she has found a focus on outdoor photography, using natural lighting.

“I’m huge on backlighting,” where light from the sun is in the background of the photos, she said. “I’m all about the light.”

It also makes for a different experience than a studio portrait session. Instead, Olson said she’ll take her subjects to a park or other outdoor location and find different backgrounds for the pictures. It’s also as much about clients having a good experience as it is getting the perfect shot, she said.

“It’s an adventure. It’s fun,” Olson said.

Olson said one of her big goals as a photographer is to have a great relationship with her clients.

“My huge passion is wedding photography,” Olson said. For a big event like a wedding, it’s important to be able to have a photographer who is reliable and good to work with. “I want all my clients to feel comfortable that I’m there for them.” It’s also the reason she welcomes questions and consultations.

Olson said she hopes to be there for clients not just on their wedding day, but into the future, for family portraits and life milestones.

While she does a lot of outdoor photography, Olson said it was a goal to someday have her own space for displays, to meet with clients, and maybe do some indoor photos during the winter season. Having her own studio will allow her to show clients examples of the kinds of photo prints and sizes they can get. She also does in-person viewings of photos she’s taken for area clients.

“It’s exciting for me to see their reactions,” Olson said. It’s also a chance to get feedback from clients and learn which shots they liked best.

“It worked out, and the timing was right,” to move into the former Vast building, Olson said. The response from people in the area has been a positive one. It’s been one of her busiest years so far, she said.

“It’s been very good. I’m very happy to be here,” Olson said. “I’m excited to see what 2017 will bring.”
