Reader makes a plea to dog owners

Dear Heloise: Here’s a suggestion to dog owners: Before leaving your yard, have your dog do their business in your own yard. I’ve asked dog owners who have allowed their dogs to use the lawn in the front of my home to do their business, “Why don’t you use your own yard for the dog to defecate?” The usual response is “Hey,I’m picking up after my dog.” Picking up after your dog is fine, but the scent remains and attracts other dogs to the same area. Then dog owners wonder why their dogs are given a bad rap. Well, I say pick up the dog’s droppings from your own yard. -- ...

Smoke signals at work

Dear Annie: I recently started a new job that I genuinely like. The people are friendly (mostly), the work is interesting and I finally feel like I may have found a place where I can stay for the long haul. But there is just one problem, and it is a big one. The woman who sits at the reception desk smokes like a chimney, and the smell does not just stay with her. It seeps into every corner of the front office, down the hallway and right into the waiting area. By the time I get home, my lungs feel like I have run a marathon through a bonfire. I have asthma, and I end most days with ...

Producing light during outages

Dear Heloise: A cautionary thought to a neighbor across the river in Omaha, Nebraska, who had a suggestion on solar lights for emergency use. Be sure not to depend on bringing them in during a thunderstorm. Stay in the house when thunderstorms are in the area. Use the alternative options that you should already have on hand in case the power goes out. Save the solar lights for long-term outages after any storms are out of the area. -- Steve T., in Council Bluffs, Iowa Steve, there are also light bulbs that have batteries in it, and every time you turn on the lamp that contains one of ...

Surgery is prudent if conservative treatment of neuroma fails

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a 68-year-old woman who is in relatively good health. My primary exercise is walking my dogs anywhere from 2-5 miles per day. I have two Morton’s neuromas in my left foot, and I’ve been receiving shots for them for at least the past eight to ten years, with the shots being more frequent in recent times. Sadly, these shots have diminishing returns and no longer eliminate the pain and discomfort. I wear the appropriate footwear and use metatarsal pads in every left shoe that I own. I am considering surgery to remove the pinched nerves. Can you discuss the pros ...
