MOORHEAD - Jada Backes scored a pair of second half goals, while Madelyn Cory made five saves, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 2-0 victory over MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s soccer on Sunday afternoon. Tigers struggle offensively in road loss to Willmar

WILLMAR — On a dreary Friday night, Marshall football hit the road for its first away game of the season, taking on Willmar and falling by a score of 34-14. In a matchup Marshall head coach Terry Bahlmann knew would be a test, the Tigers struggled to generate offense. Marshall finished with 67 passing yards and 75 rushing yards. Sam Meier scored both of the Tigers’ touchdowns. Defensively, Tyler Kraft led Marshall with six tackles. The Tigers will return to action Sept. 25 with another road test against Hutchinson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

MARSHALL - Southwest Minnesota State University head football coach, Scott Underwood, has announced his retirement on Sunday, effective immediately. SMSU Vice President of Athletics, Travis Whipple, has named SMSU defensive coordinator, Levi Bullerman, as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Underwood, the 11th head coach in team history, was in his fifth season on the Mustang sidelines and retires after serving as a head coach at the Division II level for 17 seasons. Minot State uses strong rushing attack and forces six turnovers in win over SMSU

MINOT - Minot State University took advantage of three Southwest Minnesota State turnovers in the second quarter, while also taking advantage of a dropped snap on an SMSU punt attempt, to score 28 points and cruise to a 59-0 victory in NSIC football on Saturday afternoon at Herb Parker Stadium. MSU, which opened the season with three close losses to Emporia State, Wayne State and Augustana, led 14-0 midway through the second quarter before three straight SMSU turnovers blew the game open. MARSHALL – The No. 14 ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team completed a perfect home weekend with a 3-0 victory over Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon inside the PE Gym. SMSU earned the sweep by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-21. SMSU, which extended its winning streak to three in a row, is now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. Vikings extend winning streak to 49 with rout of Canby

MINNEOTA — Minneota football extended its winning streak to 49 games with a 65-14 victory over Canby, setting a new school record and tying for the fifth-longest winning streak in Minnesota State High School League history. After Canby opened the game with a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown, the Vikings responded with 24 consecutive points to take control. Canby cut the deficit to 24-14, but Minneota answered with 41 straight points to pull away and secure the 65-14 win. The Vikings’ defense also shut out Canby in the second half.
