Tiger Area Gymnastics wins divisional state championship

ROCHESTER — The Marshall Tiger Area Gymnastics team came back from the cities with a state championship and runner-up finish from this year’s Midwest Amateur Gymnastics Association Divisional and Individual Championships over the weekend.

Marshall’s Team Diamond became state champions in Division 10 with a meet-best all-around score of 117.025, and Team Sapphire earned second place in Division 14 with a score of 108.075. Sapphire was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award following the tournament.

Team Diamond consists of Marshall gymnasts Allie Zent, Ramsi Labat, Lyla Greenwood, Dilynn Riley, Laura Kor, Ryann Kleinhuizen, Lila Green, and Team Sapphire includes Chandly Caspers, Kennadee McNett, Ayla Volstad Hughes, Aliyah Brunsvold, Mallory Jans, Lilli Bakker, Malayna Hartman, Adalie Pick, Rose Rykes and Caelyn Citrowske.

Team Diamond showed out strong to take home the championship trophy, including three girls placing in the top seven individually all-around.

Kor took first place with a score of 30.025, followed by Zent’s second-place finish of 29.775. Greenwood also came close behind and placed seventh with a 28.825.

Kor and Zent also took second and fourth, respectively, in the bars event, along with a fourth and fifth-place finish in vault by Zent and Greenwood.

In the floor event, Green came out on top with a score of 8.2, and Zent took third with a finishing score of 8.125.

For Team Sapphire, Bakker led Marshall with a score of 27.575 for second place all-around, only behind New Hope’s London Norful’s 29.425. Rykes also followed for eighth place with an all-around finish of 26.675.

Individually, Pick took first overall on the floor event with a 7.4, along with Bakker’s third-place finish of 7.05.

Jans and Bakker had a strong performance on bars, coming in sixth and seventh place for Marshall with scores of 5.825 and 5.775.

On beam, Rykes led the way in third place with a 7.65, with Bakker following in fifth with a 7.225.

Marshall Tiger Area Gymnastics also placed fifth overall as a team in Division 11 at last year’s Midwest Amateur Gymnastics Association championships. The event took place in Rochester last weekend.
