Olson, Chandler among 13 area state wrestling medalists

ST. PAUL -- Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United's Eli Olson finished as the runner-up in the Class AA 114-pound individual tournament on Saturday, leading a group of 12 area state wrestling individual medalists.

Olson was the only area individual to win his semifinal match Friday night, downing Howard Lake-Waverly-Winstead's Clayton Birkholz via 14-3 major decision. Still, Olson lost via 17-1 technical fall to Owen Parish in 4:30.

Minneota had five of its eight qualifiers for the Class A individual state meet finish with a medal. Leading the charge, Adam DeVlaeminck and Randy Sorensen each placed third while Mason Javers placed fourth.

DeVlaeminck defeated Brodie Pachan via 12-2 major decision in 139 in his final prep match, getting yet another state medal after finishing as the state runner-up last season. Sorensen, a sophomore, earned his first state medal with an 8-4 decision over New Richland's Ryan Schlaak in 189.

Javers placed fourth in 160 with a 6-2 decision over Owen Gruchow before falling to Blake Sonnenberg in the third-place match.

United also had another pair of state medalists with Benjamin Gunlogson in 145 and Kameron Sather in 160. Gunlogson won his third-place match over Parker Zutter via fall in 1:10, giving Gunlogson his second consecutive state medal after placing fourth last year, while Sather placed fourth in 160.

Marshall's Brayden Chandler defeated Sather in the 160-pound third-place match via 7-2 decision, giving him a new personal-best finish at state after placing sixth last year. The Tigers also had Lincoln Christenson earn a third-place finish in 121 with a 4-3 decision over Mound Westonka's Deacon Ramthun, giving Christenson his third top-3 state finish after winning a state title as a junior last year and finishing as a runner-up as a sophomore.

Minneota's Cael Fier and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove's David Schuh each placed fifth in 215 and 139, respectively. The Vikings also had Brock Fier place sixth in 172, while Fulda/Murray County Central's Kaston Clarke and Canby's Jordan DePestel placed sixth in 121 and 285, respectively.
