Johnston scores 30 in Vikings’ 73-48 win

Minneota 73, YME 48
GRANITE FALLS — Easton Johnston’s 30-point eruption powered the Minneota boys basketball team to a Camden Conference win on Monday, with the Vikings taking down Yellow Medicine East 73-48.
Johnston shot 11 of 17 from the field in the win, including 8 of 14 shooting from 3-point range. His eight total rebounds were also second only to Landon Esping’s nine.
Ian Myhre facilitated the offense for Minneota with five assists, followed by another four each from Evan Jerzak and Tristen Sussner. Sussner was also the only other Viking to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting.
Gunnar Fagen, Kia GreyCloud and Gavin Torvik led YME offensively with 12 points each. Fagen’s nine rebounds were also a team-high.
Myhre came away with three steals on the defensive end for Minneota while Jerzak, Johnson and Esping each blocked a shot.
Minneota (7-15) next heads to Cottonwood for a matchup against Lakeview (8-14) on Friday at 7 p.m.
YME (3-18) continues its four-game homestand when it hosts Renville County West (14-6) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
MCC 45, RTR 42
TYLER — The Murray County Central boys basketball team held off the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights in a defensive Red Rock Conference battle Tuesday night, coming away with a 45-42 win.
Aiden Swenson’s post defense was a major part of the Rebels’ defensive success. He blocked nine shots in the game as MCC held RTR to 25% shooting from the field and 11% shooting from 3 on 27 attempts. MCC shot 30% from the field and 29% from 3 on 14 attempts.
Swenson was also MCC’s leading scorer and rebounder on the night, finishing with 12 points on 5 of 14 shooting and 14 rebounds. Five of his boards came on the offensive glass.
Colten Thomsen led RTR on the offensive end with 17 points, followed by 9 from Lane Wichmann.
Dugan Kluis put together a well-rounded effort for MCC with 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
MCC improved to 14-5 with the win and next hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (2-19) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
RTR falls to 12-9 after dropping three of its last four games and looks to right the ship when it goes on the road to take on No. 5 Hills-Beaver Creek (19-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Lakeview 72, TMB 69
TRACY — The Lakeview boys basketball team eked out a 72-69 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Tuesday in Camden Conference play behind 20 points from Cody Helmke and another 19 from Braylon Breyfogle.
Griffin Zick and Connor Lanoue carried the offensive load for TMB with 26 and 20 points, respectively, while Jackson Kruse added another 16.
Zick also dished out a game-high six assists while Lanoue grabbed eight rebounds.
Lakeview improves to 8-14 and returns to Cottonwood for its home finale against Minneota (7-15) on Friday at 7 p.m.
TMB falls to 8-14 and looks to end its six-game slide on the road against Canby on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
No. 8 Dawson-Boyd 88, Ortonville 45
DAWSON –The No. 8 Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team had three players score 17 or more points in its Camden Conference matchup against Ortonville on Tuesday. The well-rounded attack led to a lopsided 88-45 win for the Blackjacks.
Carson Stratmoen was the Blackjacks’ leading scorer on the day, knocking down three of his six attempts from beyond the arc and shooting 7 of 11 from the field for 20 points. Jaxton Hastad also shot 7 of 10 from the field for 19 points, and Gunner Liebl and Landon Malecek contributed 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Malecek finished with 13 total and seven offensive rebounds to secore a double-double. Caden Brent and Hastad each grabbed another seven total rebounds while Cale Tufto dished out a game-high four assists without a turnover.
Dawson-Boyd improves to 18-3 on the season and next heads to Madison to take on Lac qui Parle Valley (3-19) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Edgerton 81, RRC 59
EDGERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team came up short in an 81-59 loss on the road to Edgerton Tuesday night in a Red Rock Conference matchup.
Henry Stavnes led the Falcons on the offensive end with a team-high of 21 points, while Ave Stavnes followed with 16 points.
Finn Batalden tallied another 12 points, while Carter Therkilsen led RRC with nine rebounds and nine assists.
RRC (6-16) will look to get back in the win column when it returns home to host Southwest Minnesota Christian (19-3) on Friday with a 7:15 p.m. tip off.
No. 5 HBC 73, WWG 34
WESTBROOK — The fifth-ranked Hills-Beaver Creek boys basketball team’s offensive firepower was too much for Westbrook-Walnut Grove to contain on Tuesday night as the Chargers fell 73-34 in Red Rock Conference play.
Drew Swanson led WWG with 14 points in the game and Jackson Jenniges finished with another 10.
WWG drops to 13-9 on the year after the Patriots ended their four-game win streak. The Chargers look to return to their winning ways when they head to Okabena to take on the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes (4-16) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
No. 10 Wabasso 103, Cedar Mountain 69
MORGAN — There was no shortage of offensive production for the No. 10 Wabasso boys basketball team against Cedar Mountain on Tuesday night. The Rabbits had five scorers finish in double figures and four score at least 16 points as they ran away with a 103-69 Tomahawk Conference win.
Bradyn Guetter led Wabasso with 26 points on the night, 20 of which came in the first half. Tavyn Larson added another 17, followed by 16 apiece from Jack Burns and Brooks Baune, while Caden Frericks finished with another 10.
Wabasso improves to 21-2 on the year and closes the regular season with a three-game homestand. The Rabbits kick off that homestand by hosting No. 2 Central Minnesota Christian (20-1) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
RCW 78, Canby 51
RENVILLE — The Canby boys basketball team’s three-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday as the Lancers fell 78-51 to Renville County West in Camden Conference play.
Canby falls to 5-15 and looks to get hot again when it hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-14) on Friday at 7:15 p.m. to open a three-game homestand to close the regular season.
