Deacon’s 27 points power Rebels past MLAC

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central girls basketball team built up an early lead and never looked back when it hosted Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey on Friday night, riding Ava Deacon’s 27 points to a 69-48 Red Rock Conference win.

Guida shot 10 of 22 from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc in the win. She also made a major defensive impact with four steals.

Kat Miller knocked down four 3-pointers on eight attempts for the Rebels, finishing the night with 12 points. Her five rebounds also tied her with Kate Blankenship for third on the team behind Reese Gilbertson’s six and Calleigh Doeden’s nine.

Blankenship was a major offensive facilitator for MCC, finishing with six assists in the game.

Murray County Central (11-9) gets back in action on Monday when it heads to Tyler for a matchup against the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights (12-10) at 7:15 p.m.

Wabasso 61, Cleveland 54

CLEVELAND — Sara Carlson’s 15 points and Kenley Guetter’s 15 rebounds helped the Wabasso girls basketball team come away with a 61-54 Tomahawk/Valley Conference win against Cleveland Friday night on the road.

Liz Morin finished with 14 points on 4 of 8 shooting, and also shot 6 for 8 from the foul line with six rebounds.

Cassie Bliss also finished in double figures with 11 points to her five rebounds and team-high four steals.

The Rabbits also shined on the defensive end, outrebounding Cleveland 44-33.

Wabasso (7-17) opens a two-game homestand to close out the regular season on Monday when it welcomes Lester Prairie (4-14) into Wabasso at 7:30 p.m.

Minneota 61, RCW 37

MINNEOTA — The Minneota girls basketball team had 10 different players knock down a field goal attempt in Friday’s Camden Conference matchup against Renville County West, with the selfless offensive effort resulting in a 61-37 win for the Vikings.

Jaylyn Coequyt was the lone Viking to finish in double figures, scoring 19 points on 8 of 24 shooting. Autum Anderson and Sarah Gruenes also scored 8 and 7 points, respectively, while three other Vikings had 5.

Minneota killed the Jaguars on the glass, finishing with 25 offensive rebounds to RCW’s three. Coequyt ended the night with 10 offensive and 15 total rebounds, Eden Meagher grabbed another four offensive boards and Ava Rost and Libby Sussner each grabbed six total rebounds.

Anderson dished out three assists and tied Rost and Sussner with three steals, trailing only Coequyt’s four.

Minneota (15-7) plays its final home game of the regular season on Friday, hosting Lakeview (19-5) for a Camden Conference matchup on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 10 HBC 54, RTR 41

HILLS — A strong defensive effort from the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team wasn’t enough to take down the 10th-ranked Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots on Friday night, as the Knights fell 54-41 in Red Rock Conference play.

Ava Guida knocked down three 3-pointers in the game to lead RTR with 15 points while Paisley Thooft added another 10 points.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (12-10) returns to Tyler on Monday, hosting Murray County Central (11-9) at 7:15 p.m.

Adrian/Ellsworth 69, WWG 48

ADRIAN — Leah Carter’s 27 points weren’t enough for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team to pick up a road win on Friday night, as the Chargers fell 69-48 to Adrian/Ellsworth in Red Rock Conference play.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (13-9) continues its stretch of road matchups when it takes on No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek (18-3) on Monday at 6 pm.

HLOF 76, RRC 30

FULDA — A solid two-way performance from Brai Olson still left the Red Rock Central girls basketball team shy of its first win on Friday as the Falcons fell 76-30 to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in Red Rock Conference play.

Olson’s 10 points and three steals were both team-highs on the night, while Celia Vogel added another 8 points.

Red Rock Central (0-23) looks to pick up its first win of the year when it hosts Madelia (0-22) in its penultimate home game of the year on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
