Stelter earns 50th win as Tigers top Bulldogs

LE SUEUR — Lily Stelter won her 50th career game in the net along with a trio of first-period Brooklyn Mauch goals to help the No. 11 Marshall girls hockey team get a big 5-3 Big South Conference win over No. 10 Minnesota River on Saturday.
Stelter finished with 20 saves on an .870 percentage, while Mauch had 5 points to lead the Tigers.
Marshall entered the road game seeking revenge after the Bulldogs got away with a 3-2 overtime win on a power play on Dec. 20 at the Red Baron.
Mauch got Marshall started with a 3-0 lead following the opening period, two scored on a power play. She scored in the third minute of the game, followed up in the eighth and 10th minute.
Ava Kolander assisted on the first and second goal, while Avery Kesteloot, Abbey Foley and Peyton DeMuth did so between the second and third goals.
Mauch and Kolander both finished with two assists.
DeMuth had the other two Marshall goals, one each scored in the second and third.
Minnesota River didn’t go down without a fight, eventually pulling within a 4-3 deficit after scoring in the first and fourth minutes of the third period back-to-back.
After more than 10 scoreless minutes, the Bulldogs got penalized and opened up the opportunity for Marshall to put the dagger on the win.
With less than a minute to play, Mauch found DeMuth for her second and final goal at the 16:08 mark on the power play to send the Tigers away with victory.
Minnesota River slightly outshot Marshall on the night 23-21, primarily in the third period 12-3.
Marshall finished with five penalties to the Bulldogs’ four, all of which were minor.
The Tigers (15-4) are nearing the end of the regular season, and will look for their fifth-straight win when they host Fairmont (7-5-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

LE SUEUR — The Marshall boys hockey team fell behind early and couldn’t find the answers to get back on track in a 5-0 Big South Conference loss to Minnesota River Saturday afternoon. McCoy Guenther had 38 saves in the net.
The Bulldogs took a quick lead in the first period with four goals scored sporadically, all on even strength.
Following a scoreless second period, Minnesota River scored one more in the third minute of the final period and held Marshall off the rest of the way.
Both the Tigers and Bulldogs had six penalties on the night, all minor.
Marshall (2-10) will stay on the road and travel to Fairmont (3-5) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
