SMSU mens hoops comes from behind for win vs. Jamestown

ST. PAUL — After trailing by a pair of points at halftime, the Southwest Minnesota State University mens basketball team staged a second-half comeback to pick up a 69-66 overtime win over Jamestown on Sunday in a non-conference matchup between two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams.

SMSU got off to a strong start in overtime, with a pair of free throws each from Mason Lund and Mekhi Shaw, another from Aeron Stevens and a layup by Jakob Braaten giving SMSU a 64-57 lead

The Jimmies trimmed SMSU’s lead down to a single possession but couldn’t take control, as SMSU held on via the free-throw game in the final seconds to claim the 69-66 win.

Jamestown led the bulk of the second half until Micah Schlaak hit a 3-pointer to give SMSU a 50-49 lead with five minutes to play. The lead was the Mustangs’ first lead of the second half.

The two teams battled back and forth, with a pair of Stevens free throws giving SMSU a 2-point lead in the final minute. Still, Ford Okehi hit a pair of free-throws for Jamestown to tie up the game with 30 seconds left and Lund and Schlaak each missed shots in the final two seconds to send the game to overtime.

The Mustangs put together a well-balanced scoring effort in the win. Schlaak led the team with 14 points, followed by 13 from Stevens, 12 from Braaten, 11 from Shaw and 10 from Brayson Boike.

Schlaak also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds, followed by seven each from Stevens, Braaten and Lund. SMSU outrebounded the Jimmies 41-33, including an 18-12 edge on the offensive glass behind four offensive rebounds each from Lund and Schlaak.

SMSU went 1-1 over the weekend after falling 78-68 to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday in St. Paul. Stevens and Braaten scored 21 and 20 points respectively in the game, along with seven rebounds and six assists from Braaten and a 13-point, five-assist, two-block effort from Shaw, but Dominic Gooden’s 27 points for the Dragons was too much for SMSU to overcome.

The Mustangs are now 2-3 on the season after the weekend split and return to conference play on Thursday when they go on the road to take on Augustana at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 5:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
