Helmke, Breyfogle combine for 41 in win over RRC

COTTONWOOD — Cody Helmke and Braylon Breyfogle combined for 41 points for the Lakeview boys basketball team on Monday, leading the Lakers to a 94-56 non-conference win over Red Rock Central to kick off the season.
Helmke scored a game-high 26 points in the win, including 15 in the second half, while Breyfogle scored 25 with 19 coming after the break. Trevor Tusberg also chipped in 15 points for Lakeview.
For the Falcons, Henry Stavnes led the way with 19 points with a trio of 3-pointers.
Lakeview led 42-35 at halftime before finding its rhythm after the break with 52 second-half points.
Lakeview improves to 1-0 with the win and heads to Granite Falls tonight to take on Yellow Medicine East at 7:30 p.m., while Red Rock Central falls to 0-1 and travels to Tracy to take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at the same time.
Mankato Loyola 81, WWG 64
MANKATO — Drew Swanson and Connor Jackels’ combined 44 points weren’t enough to net the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team a victory in its season-opener on Monday night as the Chargers fell 81-64 to Mankato Loyola in non-conference play.
Swanson scored a team-leading 24 points in the loss, draining a pair of first-half 3-pointers to head into the locker room with 17 points. Jackels, meanwhile, scored most of his points in the second half, adding 14 points after the break.
Swanson also contributed eight rebounds and four assists while Jackels finished with five steals.
Tucker Krick made a pair of 3-pointers in the second half to finish with 10 points.
WWG falls to 0-1 with the loss and looks to get in the win column on Thursday when it goes on the road to take on Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey at 7:30 p.m.
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lakeview 68, Edgerton 56
EDGERTON –Brynn Stensrud scored 23 points in the Lakeview girls basketball team’s season opener on Monday night to lead the Lakers past Edgerton for a 68-56 win.
Stensrud scored her points efficiently, shooting 9 of 15 from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. Addyson Jorgenson also chipped in with 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting, knocking down both of her 3-point attempts and making a defensive impact with eight steals, while Brook Gunlogson added another 11 points.
Anah Schmidt dominated the glass for the Lakers, grabbing 16 of the team’s 36 total rebounds and accounting for five of its 15 offensive boards. Gunlogson also grabbed four offensive rebounds, and dished out a team-high three assists.
Lakeview improves to 1-1 and hosts Yellow Medicine East tonight at 7:30 p.m.
