Guenther makes 71 saves in loss to Luverne

LUVERNE –A legacy game from McCoy Guenther in goal wasn’t enough to put the Marshall boys hockey team on top against Luverne on Thursday night. The senior netminder finished the Big South Conference matchup with 71 saves, but the Tigers lost to the Cardinals 3-0.

The performance marks the second in a row that Guenther set a career-high save total after logging 39 in the Tigers’ 3-1 loss to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato on Saturday. Prior to that, Guenther’s career high was 26.

Luverne finished the night with 74 shots on goal to Marshall’s 14. The Tigers registered five shots in each of the first two periods and four in the third. Luverne, meanwhile, fired off 31 shots in the second period, bookended by 19 in the first and 21 in the second.

Luverne scored its first goal 11 minutes into the first period and a second in the final two minutes of the frame. After allowing a third goal halfway through the second, Guenther shut out the Cardinals for the remainder of the game but was unable to get the goal support for Marshall to capitalize on the performance.

The Cardinals were called for three two-minute minors in the game while Marshall was called for five.

Marshall falls to 1-3-0 with the loss and next takes on Waseca on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
