Six area players named to Class A All-State team

ST. PAUL — Southwest Minnesota was well-represented in the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class A All-State team, announced on Tuesday at the State Banquet at Roy Wilkins Auditorium on the eve of the state tournament. The Independent’s 11 Class A schools combined for six selections from four different schools, including Minneota’s Eden Meagher and Abby Rolbiecki, Canby’s Emily Nelson and Karlie Wollum, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Ava Karbo and Wabasso’s Audrey Johnson.

For the Vikings, Rolbiecki’s selection marked her second time being named to an All-State team while Meagher’s selection was her first. Rolbiecki racked up 277 digs in the regular season of her senior year, while Meagher recorded 233 kills, 36 blocks and 126 digs in her sophomore year.

The duo helped the Vikings reach their ninth consecutive section championship match before falling to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

Karbo will have the opportunity to continue building on her impressive senior season for RTR as the Knights advance to the state tournament, with its quarterfinal match against No. 7 Nevis on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Grand Casino Arena. Karbo finished the regular season with 42 blocks and 234 kills on a .325 hitting percentage to help the Knights to a Section 3A title and earn her first All-State nod.

Canby’s senior duo of Wollum and Nelson each earned their second All-State selections this season. Nelson had a notably well-rounded season at setter, finishing first among all area players with 73 service aces, first on the Lancers with 532 set assists, second on the team in digs and kills with 250 and 228 and also chipped in 18 total blocks.

Wollum got a late start to the season after entering the year injured, but put together another spectacular campaign with 210 kills, 248 digs and 21 total blocks.

Johnson is also now a repeat all-state honoree for the Wabasso Rabbits after capping off her prep career with 373 digs in her senior season.

Starting at $3.95/week.
