Tiger trio named to Class 3A All-State team
ST. PAUL — A trio of Tigers were selected to the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class AAA All-State Team at the State Banquet at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium on Tuesday night. Seniors Reese Drake, Avery Fahl and Brooke Gillingham each made the cut for the team, with the selection being the first for Gillingham and the second for Drake and Fahl.
Drake finished the season as one of the state’s top two-way players. Her 351 kills and 46 service aces were both first among Tigers this year, and her 257 digs ranked second on the team behind libero Kezlyn Pinckney’s 271.
The senior outside hitter’s play made her one of five finalists for the Ms. Baden Volleyball Award, which recognizes career excellence among the top Minnesota seniors. She was the only non-Class 4A nominee for the award, which has only been won by a non-Class 4A player twice since 2000.
Fahl was a major defensive presence for the Tigers up at the net all season, racking up 39 ace blocks as well as 162 digs. She also made a major offensive impact, racking up 293 kills on 503 attempts and finishing second on the team in set assists with 416.
Gillingham was Marshall’s leader in set assists over the course of the regular season with 516, and added 131 digs and 33 service aces.
The trio of Tigers will look to add to their extensive trophy cases this weekend as Marshall kicks off its state tournament run against Big Lake today at 5 p.m. at Grand Casino Arena.
