Vikings sweep CMC in Camden opener

MINNEOTA — The top-ranked Class A Minneota volleyball team picked up its fifth sweep of the season in the Camden Conference opener Tuesday night over Central Minnesota Christian in sets of 25-22, 25-9 and 25-13.
The Vikings were again firing on all cylinders, led by Abigail Rolbiecki’s 14 digs and Edem Meagher’s 12 kills.
Libby Sussner and Sophie Gillund tallied 18 and 15 set assists on the night, respectively.
Along with Rolbiecki, Meagher also finished with eight digs while Sussner had another five.
Minneota had several offensive contributions, with another nine kills from Jaylyn Coequyt. Sarah Gruenes and Leah Coequyt each had five kills as well.
Leah Coequyt led Minneota with a trio of blocks, while Gruenes and Natalie Ratajczak both had two.
Minneota (7-2) heads out on the road for its next match against Dawson-Boyd (0-6) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
No. 3 RTR 3, MLAC 0
TYLER — The No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team continued to build off its success at last weekend’s Southwest Challenge with another strong outing on Tuesday. The Knights hosted the Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey Wolverines and pulled out a straight-sets win in Red Rock Conference play, 25-12, 25-14, 25-17.
Dru Ellefson and Brezlyn Buchert facilitated a balanced offense with 17 and 13 set assists, respectively. Sarah and Paisley Thooft were the Knights’ leading hitters with 10 and nine kills, while Brynn Borresen and Ava Karbo each contributed another eight kills.
Sarah Thooft also finished with a match-high five service aces, and was one of three Knights with an ace block alongside Paisley Thooft and Ava Karbo.
Laken Baartman led the RTR back row with 15 digs, followed by Buchert with 13 and Sarah Thooft with 12. Baartman and Taylin Thooft each also served up a trio of aces in the match.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (7-4) travels to Adrian on Thursday for a 7:15 p.m. matchup against Adrian/Ellsworth (1-2).
No. 9 MACCRAY 3,
No. 6 Canby 1
CANBY — A strong and red-hot MACCRAY volleyball team was too much for the Canby Lancers to handle on Tuesday night. The two teams went into the match both ranked top 10 in the state, but the Lancers were unable to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the season as MACCRAY walked away with a four-set win.
The match was tied through two sets, with MACCRAY taking the first 25-20 and Canby taking the second 25-22. In a back-and-forth third set, MACCRAY held off the Lancers for a 25-21 win and finished off Canby with a 25-16 win in the fourth.
Setters Brynn Kockelman and Emily Nelson were the Lancers’ offensive leaders, each finishing top 2 on the team in assists and kills. Kockelman recorded 12 kills and 17 set assists, while Nelson tallied nine kills and 21 assists. Nelson’s 13 digs were also shy of only libero Jaryn Houseman’s 21 and Karlie Wollum’s 15.
Wollum assisted three blocks in the match while Rachel Jelen assisted on flour. Wollum also contributed eight kills.
Canby (5-4) takes on the Ortonville Trojans (2-2) for its next match in Ortonville on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
YME 3, LQPV 0
GRANITE FALLS — Just three days after picking up its first win of the season, the Yellow Medicine East volleyball team got back into the win column with a Camden Conference sweep of Lac qui Parle Valley. Abbey Bones and Alana Almich set the tone up front for the Sting as they defeated the Eagles 25-20, 25-22, 25-18.
Almich led the team with 13 kills and an ace block while Bones finished with 11 kills, two ace blocks and a service ace.
Ella Cherveny led the Sting’s back row with eight digs, while Lexi Stengel tallied 31 set assists and a service ace.
Yellow Medicine East (2-6) takes on MACCRAY (5-0) in Clara City for its next game on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
WWG 3, A/E 1
WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches on Tuesday against Adrian/Ellsworth in Red Rock Conference play, with the Chargers claiming a four-set victory.
The Dragons won the first set 25-21, but it was all WWG from there. The Chargers strung together three consecutive games, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21, to close out the victory.
Carlie Ross put together a two-way effort for the Chargers, with her 15 kills and 24 digs both standing as team-highs. Natasha Wahl and Leah VanDeWiele also tallied 22 and 16 digs, while Leah Carter contributed another 13 kills.
Hadley Jenniges logged 41 set assists in the match.
Defensively, Myah Maznio finished with two ace blocks and four block assists while Ross chipped in another pair of block assists.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (7-1) next travels to Fulda for a match against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (3-4) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
RRC 3, HBC 1
LAMBERTON — Amelia Ubl and Natasha Erickson put together strong back-row efforts for the Red Rock Central volleyball team on Tuesday as the Falcons defeated Hills-Beaver Creek in four sets to claim their first win of the season.
RRC eked out a first-set win, 25-23, before dropping the second 25-21. The match remained close from there, but the Falcons continued to hold on with 25-23 and 25-19 wins to close out the victory.
Ubl led the back row defensively with 16 digs while Erickson added another 15, as well as a team-leading 21 set assists.
Ally Linder notched 10 kills in the match while Shylin Hagert added another nine. Hagert also registered six total blocks, followed by three each from Erickson and Linder.
Red Rock Central (1-3) will next match up against Southwest Minnesota Christian (3-4) in Edgerton on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 3,
No. 11 Wabasso 2
SLEEPY EYE — The Wabasso volleyball team’s recent woes continued on Tuesday. After falling out of the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association’s top 10 rankings to start the week, the Rabbits dropped their third consecutive match on Tuesday, falling in five sets to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in Tomahawk Conference play.
The Rabbits held a 2-1 lead through three sets, claiming the first 25-17 and the third 25-11 but dropping the second 25-22. Still, SESM locked in with its back against the wall and picked up 26-24 and 16-14 wins in the final two sets to walk away with the comeback victory.
Carly Fenger led a solid blocking effort in the match for Wabasso. She and Camryn Irlbeck each had a pair of solo blocks, as well as five block assists for Fenger and three for Irlbeck.
Sara Carlson distributed 47 set assists in the match for Wabasso and tied Camryn Irlbeck with four service aces.
Offensively, Kenley Guetter logged 16 kills, followed by Leah Mathiowetz with 10 and Irlbeck and Fenger with another nine each. Guetter’s 13 digs were also second only to Audrey Johnson’s 19.
Wabasso (2-19) will look to bounce back on its home court on Thursday when it hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-3) at 7:15 p.m. ahead of the Rabbits’ home tournament on Saturday.
HLOF 3, MCC 1
FULDA — Ava Deacon recorded a team-high 40 digs and Kate Blankenship followed with 25 more, but the Murray County Central volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda Tuesday night in a Red Rock Conference matchup.
HLOF set the tone early and took the first set 25-13, yet the Rebels found an immediate response in dominant fashion with a 25-8 win in the second set.
But, HLOF regained its control over the next two sets to finish off the night, 25-23 and 25-20.
MCC’s defense was contagious throughout the night, with five different players tallying double-digit digs.
Along with Deacon and Blankenship, Suttyn Schryvers had 19 digs, while Reese Gilbertson and Kat Miller finished with 13 and 10, respectively.
On the offensive end, Addy Dierks led the team with 15 set assists and Erynn Rohrer had another 12.
Schryvers had a team-high 10 kills, and Gilbertson followed with seven.
MCC previously won two straight matches last week over Lakeview and Dawson-Boyd, prior to meeting HLOF.
Murray County Central (2-2) returns to Slayton on Thursday to host Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey at 7:15 p.m.
Lakeview 3, Ortonville 1
COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview volleyball team continued to heat up on Tuesday night when it hosted Ortonville for a Camden Conference matchup. The Lakers defeated the Trojans in four sets, earning their fifth win in their last six matches after an 0-3 start to the season.
The Lakers claimed each of the first two sets of Tuesday’s match by scores of 25-20, 25-17. The Trojans won the third game 25-23 but the Lakers responded by shutting down Ortonville entirely with a 25-6 statement win in game 4.

Lakeview (5-4) next heads to Prinsburg to take on Central Minnesota Christian (5-3) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
RCW 3, Dawson-Boyd 0
RENVILLE — The Dawson-Boyd volleyball team suffered its sixth straight loss as it fell 3-0 to Renville County West Tuesday night in a Camden Conference matchup in sets of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-11.
The Blackjacks struggled to find answers to the Jaguars, who continued to aggressively attack throughout the night.
Kylar Hjelmeland led Dawson-Boyd offensively with five kills, while Kadyn Perkins followed with four.
Claire Stratmoen had a team-high nine set assists, and Kate Gruwell protected the back row with 11 digs on the night. Perkins and Hattie Kemen each had seven digs as well.
Dawson-Boyd (0-6) now faces the tall task of hosting the top-ranked Minneota Vikings (7-2) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
KMS 3, TMB 1
TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team was unable to steal a win against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Tuesday, dropping its Camden Conference opener in four sets for its seventh loss in its last eight matches.
TMB responded to 25-20 first-set loss with a 25-17 win in game 2. Yet, the Fighting Saints eked out the Panthers in each of the next two sets, 26-24 and 25-22, to walk away with the win.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (2-7) hits the road to Madison for a matchup against Lac qui Parle Valley (0-4) for its next game on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

No. 11A Wabasso 1
NEW LONDON — Sara Carlson’s elite performance as a distributor and the Wabasso volleyball team’s overall strong blocking effort weren’t enough to get the Rabbits in the win column against New London-Spicer on Monday in non-conference play. The Rabbits put up some quality stat lines, but fell in four sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-27, 25-20.
Carlson finished the day with 43 set assists, and her 15 digs trailed only libero Audrey Johnson’s 22. She also tied Kenley Guetter with four block assists, trailing only Camryn Irlbeck’s six block assists with an ace block.
Irlbeck was also Wabasso’s leading hitter with 14 kills, followed by 12 from Carly Fenger and 10 from Kenley Guetter.
Carlson, Irlbeck and Britta Brand each served up an ace in the match while Guetter and Leah Mathiowetz each recorded 13 digs.
Hancock 3,
Dawson-Boyd 0
HANCOCK — A team defensive effort wasn’t enough for the Dawson-Boyd volleyball team to pull out a win on Monday, falling 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 to Hancock in non-conference play.
Kate Gruwell led the team with seven digs in the match while Claire Stratmoen, Kadyn Perkins and Kylar Hjelmeland each added another six. Perkins and Hjelmeland were also the team’s leading hitters, with seven and four kills, respectively, and tied Emma Stotesbery with a team-leading two service aces.
Stratmoen logged 16 set assists in the loss while Stella Ross finished with three ace blocks.
LAKEVIEW
TOURNAMENT
WWG, 1st place
The Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team went a perfect 4-0 at the Lakeview tournament over the weekend, claiming sweeps of Lakeview, Windom and New London-Spicer while defeating Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta 2-1.
The Chargers opened the tournament with a 25-9, 25-21 win over Lakeview, led by Hadley Jenniges’ seven service aces, 17 set assists and six digs. Jenniges also tied Leah Carter and Leah Foster with a team-high six kills and her dig total trailed only Carlie Ross’ seven.
WWG split its first two sets against Morris Area before coming out on top in the tiebreaker. Ross and Foster led the way offensively with 10 and five kills, respectively, while Jenniges tallied 16 set assists. Leah VanDeWiele led the back row with five digs.
In its third match, the Chargers claimed a 25-18, 25-4 win over Windom. Ross and VanDeWiele each tallied 12 digs in the win while Foster added another eight. Ross’ nine kills were also a match-high.
Foster, VanDeWiele and Natasha Wahl each served up an ace while Jenniges recorded 16 set assists.
In the tournament championship, the Chargers defeated New London-Spicer 25-18, 25-19. Ross tallied 11 digs and five kills in the match while Jenniges added five kills and 17 set assists.
Foster finished the match with six kills while Natasha Wahl contributed eight digs.
Lakeview, 3rd place
The Lakeview Lakers went 3-1 at their weekend tournament, finishing the day with three straight wins after their opening-round loss to Westbrook-Walnut Grove.
Lakeview bounced back from its 25-9, 25-21 loss to the Chargers with a 25-21, 25-20 win over Windom.They followed up with a 25-18-19-25 win over Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta via a tiebreaker, and closed out the tournament with a 25-17, 25-18 sweep of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

YME, 7th place
The Yellow Medicine East volleyball team picked up its first win of the season at the Lakeview tournament over the weekend, defeating Edgerton 2-0 but dropping its other two matches.
The Sting opened the tournament with a 25-21, 25-20 win over Edgerton but fell 25-12, 26-24 to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and 25-18, 25-15 to New London-Spicer.
Lexi Stengel tallied 40 set assists with a pair of service aces over the course of the tournament. On the finishing end of those assists, Alana Almich, Abbey Bones and Bailey Mortenson led the way with 15, 12 and 11 kills.
Ella Cherveny logged 15 digs in the back row while Baylie Sneller contributed eight digs with six service aces and three kills.
