Sting singles hold off Tigers

MARSHALL — Singles success paved the path to victory for the Yellow Medicine East girls tennis team in its road matchup against Marshall on Monday. The Sting claimed each of the top three singles matches on the day to claim a 4-3 win over the Tigers.

Brianna Nelson kicked the Sting off with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brooklyn Mauch in the top singles match, while Emma Keller battled past Kathryn Coudron for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win in singles No. 2. Sarana West also earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Kyra Bailey in singles No. 3.

Marshall claimed two of the three doubles matches on the day, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Emry Weller and Jazilyn Steinberg-Jones topped Breea Johnson and Brooklyn Howe 6-0, 6-1 in the top doubles match while Peyton and Eme DeMuth defeated Reagan Streich and Annelise Jahn 6-1, 6-2 in doubles No. 3.

Kyla Smith and Carley Redepenning gave the Sting the last point they needed to secure the win, beating Emry Jahns and Julia Pasko 6-2, 6-3 in doubles No. 2.

Cora Medina earned Marshall’s lone singles point of the day, beating Abigail Jimenez 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).

Marshall falls to 3-8 on the season and next hosts Waseca on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Minnewaska 6, YME 1

MINNEWASKA — Brianna Nelson gave the Yellow Medicine East girls tennis team its lone point of the day in its match against Minnewaska as the Sting fell 6-1.

Nelson took on Rachel Ranker in singles No. 1, claiming a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory.

Minnewaska swept the rest of the day’s matches. In singles, Emma Keller fell 6-2, 6-0 to Livi Danielson, Sarana West dropped 6-1, 6-1 to Izzy Wallen and Abigail Jimenez lost 6-0, 6-0 to Qu Quelle.

In doubles, Breea Johnson and Brooklyn Howe lost 6-1, 6-2 to Abby Heid and Nora Vanzee, Kyla Smith and Carly Redepenning lost 6-1, 6-3 to Clara Ranker and Peyton Sondheim and Reagan Streich and Annelise Jahn lost 6-1, 6-4 to Kaylen and Kennedy Blair.

YME falls to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in conference with the loss, and next takes on Sauk Centre in Granite Falls on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
