Mortenson, Bones help YME pick up 3-0 sweep vs. Ortonville

GRANITE FALLS — Abbey Bones and Hailey Mortenson combined for 16 kills for the Yellow Medicine East volleyball team in the Sting’s Camden Conference matchup against Ortonville on Tuesday. YME took advantage of the offensive production with a sweep of the Trojans, claiming set victories by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-21.
Bones and Mortenson each finished with eight kills in the match, while Lexi Stengel distributed 29 set assists.
Defensively, Alana Almich and Ella Cherveny led the way for YME with 10 and eight digs, respectively. Everra Leenerts and Kourtney Peterson also chipped in four digs each, while Hannah Bjorndal contributed three kills.
Tuesday’s win brings YME’s record to 3-7 on the season, with each of the wins coming via sweep. The Sting will head to Prinsburg on Thursday to take on Central Minnesota Christian (8-5) at 7:15 p.m., with the Bluejays coming off a big win over No. 6 Canby on Tuesday.
RRC 3, Edgerton 2
EDGERTON — Natasha Erickson put on a defensive masterclass for the Red Rock Central volleyball team on Tuesday when the Falcons took on Edgerton in a five-set battle. Her performance helped the Falcons overcome a two-set deficit to start the night and respond with three consecutive set victories to pull out the win.
Edgerton claimed the night’s first two games by scores of 25-13 and 25-19 when RRC began to shift momentum. The Falcons pulled out a win in an extended third set by a score of 26-24, and eked out another extended-set win by a score of 27-25 to force a tiebreaker.
The winner-take-all fifth set remained competitive throughout, but RRC held on again for an 18-16 win to end its six-match skid.
Offensively, Ally Linder and Abby Evans led RRC with 14 kills each in the match, while Shylin Hagert and Paige Wondercheck contributed 12 and 10, respectively. Natasha Erickson also tallied 22 set assists.
Hagert made a defensive impact up front with five ace blocks, while Erickson added another three ace blocks with a service ace to boot.
Amelia Ubl contributed 13 digs in the win.
RRC improves to 2-9 on the season and returns to Lamberton to host Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (2-8) for its next match on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Lakeview 3, Dawson-Boyd 0
COTTONWOOD — Khya Gawarecki and Nicole Schwartz spread the ball around to all hitters for the Lakeview volleyball team, setting up four teammates for five or more kills each on Tuesday as the Lakers picked up a Camden Conference sweep of Dawson-Boyd.
The Lakers never let the Blackjacks get into the match. Lakeview took the first game 25-15 and continued to dominate from there, winning the second 15-11 and closing out the match with a 25-16 win.
Gawarecki and Schwartz finished the match with 16 and 10 set assists respectively, with Schwartz adding a pair of service aces to her contributions.
On the finishing end of those assists, Taylor Hinz tallied a team-high 11 kills while Kiara Hinz added another eight. Allison Isaacs and Laia Javens chipped in seven and six kills, respectively.
Aside from her offensive contributions, Kiara Hinz also made a defensive impact with nine digs.
Kadyn Perkins finished with a match-high 11 digs for Dawson-Boyd while Claire Stratmoen finished with another seven. Stratmoen also tallied nine set assists on the night, while Perkins logged a service ace.
Rylan Plessner and Kylar Hjelmeland each recorded a pair of ace blocks for the Blackjacks, while Stella Roth led Dawson-Boyd with three kills.
Lakeview improves to 6-5 on the season, having won five of its last six matches, and heads to Kerkhoven for a matchup against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (3-6) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Wabasso 3, Sleepy Eye 0
SLEEPY EYE — Sara Carlson’s 37 set assists paced the Wabasso volleyball team’s offense to a 3-0 sweep over Sleepy Eye Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Conference matchup in set wins of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-20.
Carly Fenger and Kenley Guetter led the Rabbits with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Camryn Irlbeck and Carlee Jenniges added another seven and six.
Audrey Johnson and Carlson anchored Wabasso’ defense with eight and seven digs, while Irlbeck had a trio of service aces.
Johnson and Carlson each had two aces on the night as well.
Wabasso remains tough at the front of the net, as the team collectively finished with 10 blocks.
Guetter had four of the blocks, two of which were solo, while Irlbeck had another three assisted.
The win marks three straight for Wabasso, who have also taken six of its last seven matches.
Wabasso (8-4, 2-2) will look to stay in the win column when it remains on the road for the second of a four-game road trip at Renville County West on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
No. 7 MACCRAY 3, TMB 0
TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team put up a fight against No. 7 MACCRAY Tuesday night behind an aggressive team effort on both ends, but ultimately came up short in a 3-0 loss in sets of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-23 in a Camden Conference matchup.
The Panthers were on the verge of handing the Wolverines their second loss of the season and came close to forcing a fourth set after a rally in the third.
Braelynn Kirk led TMB with six kills on the night, while Melaina Ankrum followed with another four.
Ankrum and Kirk also led the Panthers defensively, both finishing with a team-high 11 digs. Taylor Munson followed with five digs.
Ankrum’s 10 assists paced the offense, and she also had a block.
Bella Martinez finished with a trio of ace serves as well.
TMB (3-8) will next hit the road to Ortonville (4-7) on Thursday with a 7:15 p.m. first serve.
CMC 3, No. 6 Canby 2
CANBY — Karlie Wollum, Brynn Kockelman and Emily Nelson combined for 38 kills, but the Canby volleyball team ultimately suffered a 3-2 loss in a competitive Camden Conference matchup against Central Minnesota Christian Tuesday night.
The Lancers were on the verge of claiming a reverse-sweep victory after dropping the first two sets 18-25 and 15-25, and winning games 3 and 4 in scores of 25-20 and 25-22, but the Bluejays came out firing in set five with a 15-5 win to take the match.
Wollum led Canby with 16 kills on a .364 hitting percentage, while Nelson and Kockelman each had 11 apiece.
Canby had an aggressive defensive approach, finishing the night with 91 total digs. Kockelman and Wollum each had 20, while Jaryn Houseman followed with 16 and Nelson recorded another 13.
Pacing the offense, Nelson led with a team-high 27 set assists and Kockelman followed with 22.
Karli Weber finished the night with a pair of blocks.
Canby, who’s dropped two of its last three matches, will look to get back in the win column when it hits the road to Dawson-Boyd (1-11) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

HILLS — The Murray County Central volleyball team picked up a Red Rock Conference sweep of Hills-Beaver Creek on Thursday, 25-13, 25-23, 25-18.
