Argueta’s goal, assist lead Tigers past TCU

MONTGOMERY — Isaiah Argueta logged an assist and a game-winning goal for the Marshall boys soccer team in the Tigers’ 2-1 road win over Tri-City United in Big South Conference play on Tuesday.

In the final minute of the first half, Sabino Us was fouled on a breakaway about 30 yards out from the goal. Argueta stepped up to take the free kick and launched it to the right of the Titan wall, taking one bounce by the goal line and into the back of the net to beat the keeper for the 2-1 lead.

From there, the Tigers played defensively in the second half in an effort to return to the conference final, Marshall head coach Tony Correa said. The strategy proved to be effective, as Marshall’s conservative approach prevented any more scoring in the match as the Tigers held on for the win.

Marshall got on the board early with a sixth-minute goal. Argueta used some fancy footwork to evade a pair of tackles from Titan defenders from 30 yards out before launching the ball toward the goal to keep it in the attacking zone.

The TCU keeper deflected the shot, but couldn’t hold onto the ball, and Us was Johnny-on-the-spot to recover the loose ball and tap it in for the go-ahead goal.

TCU responded just minutes later with a shot that deflected off the post and out. The Marshall keeper nearly made the save, but the sideline official ruled the ball fully crossed the plane and the Titans were awarded the equalizer.

Marshall improves to 6-5-0 with the win and will have a big game on Thursday when they host Worthington (6-2-0), in a game that will have dramatic effects on how the Big South Conference standings shake out. The Trojans defeated the Tigers 2-0 when the teams met earlier this season in Worthington.
