Smith leads Irish to doubleheader sweep
Milroy 6, Pipestone 5 (7 inn.)
MILROY — The Milroy Irish picked up a pair of wins in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, defeating the Pipestone A’s 6-5 in a Gopher League matchup followed up with a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Fox Lake.
Milroy and Pipestone’s game was cut to seven innings due to the Irish playing two games.
The two teams each scored three quick runs in the opening inning, yet Milroy continued to chip away with another pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth to build its lead up.
The A’s were able to score one in each the third and sixth, but good pitching performances for Milroy were able to hold Pipestone off.
Connor Lanoue pitched the first five innings for four strikeouts while allowing eight hits, four walks and three earned runs. Craig Lasley stepped in as relief for one innings, and tossed three strikeouts while allowing two hits. Derek Smith finished off the game in the seventh, and pitched three straight strikeouts with no walks or hits for the save, and also went 2 for 2 at the plate. Andrew Wallen also went 2 for 3 Milroy.
Collectively, the Irish finished with seven hits and one error to the A’s 10 hits and one error.
Milroy 10, Fox Lake 0 (6 inn.)
MILROY — The Milroy Irish didn’t show any sign of fatigue in its second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, defeating the Fox Lake Foxes 10-0 in six innings, marking Milroy’s third win in four games.
Hitting was contagious among the Irish, with Dominic Dolan and Tyler Alcorn each recording a double, while Dolan and Tyler Maeyaert also had triples on the day. Derek Smith led the Irish going 4 for 4 at the plate and a game-high three RBIs, along with two triples.
Adding to the impressive performances, Trevor Smith pitched all six innings for the shutout, throwing eight strikeouts while allowing no walks and eight hits.
Milroy finished the game with 13 hits and no errors, to Fox Lake’s eight hits and two errors.
Following Derek on the offensive end, Dolan, Maeyaert, Andrew Wallen and Tyler Alcorn each had a pair of hits as well, along with Dolan’s two RBIs.
Milroy only went scoreless in the third inning, and surged ahead behind a five-run fourth inning.
Milroy (11-8) remains at the top of the Gopher League standings, two games ahead of Luverne. The Irish will next host Granite Falls on Sunday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
Minneota 6, Dumont 3
MINNEOTA — The Minneota Mudhens fell short 6-3 to the Dumont Saints in their final regular season home game Sunday afternoon in a Land O’ Ducks offensively competitive matchup.
Both Minneota and Dumont finished with eight hits, while the Saints tallied four errors to the Mudhens’ one.
Ryan Dalager spent the entire game on the mound and tossed 10 strikeouts, yet Dumont’s Jordon Roos threw 17 strikeouts.
The Saints took a 4-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in each the first and third innings, and Minneota cut into the deficit with three runs between the fifth and sixth. But, another run in the top of the sixth and ninth while holding the Mudhens scoreless the final three innings helped Dumont come away with the victory.
AJ Myhre led Minneota going 3 for 5 at the plate, while Austin Buysse followed with two hits.
In the bottom of the ninth inning with Minneota looking to tie the game or walk-off, Dumont’s Roos threw two more strikeouts along with a right field fly ball catch.
Along with his 10 strikeouts, Dalager allowed eight walks with five earned runs.
Coming into the game, Minneota and Dumont each only had two losses in league play. Dumont proceeds with an 8-2 Land O’ Ducks record for second place in the standings, and Minneota follows behind at 7-3 for fourth behind Clinton’s 8-3 record.
Minneota (8-3 overall) will next hit the road to take on Madison (6-6) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Worthington 12, Hadley 0 (7 inn.)
HADLEY — Hits were hard to come by for the Hadley Buttermakers on Sunday, falling 12-0 in five innings to the Worthington Cubs in Gopher League play.
Max Zwart and Jacob Olson each singled twice for Hadley in the loss, while Tucker Sorenson accounted for a double.
Jacob Van Dam was charged with the loss after allowing eight earned runs on five hits and three walks over five innings, dropping him to 0-2 on the season.
In relief, Josh Van Dam gave up three earned runs on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 3 1/3, while Owen Gillette got two outs while giving up one earned run on one hit.
Hadley falls to 13-9 on the year and will host the Milroy Yankees on Sunday at 2 p.m. for Fan Appreciation Day.
Raymond 12, Wabasso 0 (7 inn.)
RAYMOND — The Wabasso Jaxx couldn’t find their offensive rhythm in Sunday’s Corn Belt League game against Raymond, falling 12-0 in seven innings.
The Rockets scored one run in the first inning and three more in the second. They never looked back from there, coasting to a mercy-rule win.
Austin Gunderson was the lone Jaxx to reach base multiple times in the loss, finishing with a single and a walk. He got to third base on both occasions but was unable to score. Adryen Tietz and Colton Taylor each also logged a single.
Noah Anderson was charged with the loss in his three-inning start, giving up two earned and three unearned runs on four hits and five walks. Josh Guetter gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and a walk over the final three frames.
Wabasso 8, Willmar Indians 7
WILLMAR — The Wabasso Jaxx staved off a furious late-game rally from the Willmar Indians in the second game of their Corn Belt League doubleheader on Sunday to hold on for an 8-7 win.
Wabasso led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Willmar put together two walks, two singles and capitalized on a Wabasso error to put three runs on the board, They added another three runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-6, and went into the bottom of the ninth trailing by a pair of runs.
Nemias Caballero hit a triple with one out in the ninth and scored on a Jelking Herrera sacrifice fly to right field to make it a one-run game. The Indians loaded the bases with singles from Jose Ortiz and Yorfred Arauz, and a walk to Raymond Rodriguez, but Josh Guetter fielded a pop out on the mound to secure the save.
Joseph Liebl got the win on the mound for Wabasso, going 7 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks. he also struck out nine batters on the day.
In relief, Guetter gave up four earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over 1 2/3 frames.
Wabasso staked an early lead when Austin Gunderson reached base on an error, stole second and scored on a Liebl ground out.
Two innings later, the Jaxx’s bats got active again. Leo Meis led off the inning with a double and scored on an Adryen Tietz triple. Austin Gunderson followed up with an RBI single and Taylor put both runners in scoring position with a double before Liebl hit a two-run single to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Rabbits.
Liebl and Gunderson each finished the day with three hits, including three RBIs for Liebl and two for Gunderson. Liebl also tripled twice with an RBI while Taylor had a double and a single.
After Willmar started to get back into the game, Meis got the Jaxx back on the board when he was hit by a pitch and scored when Taylor reached on an error.
Tietz tripled before scoring on a Gunderson sacrifice fly to straightaway centerfield in the eighth, and Cooper Freitag gave Wabasso a much-needed insurance run when he singled and scored on a Meis single in the top of the ninth.
Wabasso improves to 7-14 with the win and hosts Sleepy Eye for its next game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
