COLD SPRING — The Marshall Junior Legion Black baseball team won each of its three games at the Cold Spring Tournament over the weekend to win the event. Marshall opened with a 2-1 win over Paynesville and a 6-2 win over Litchfield on Friday, and closed out the tournament victory with a 10-6 win over Cold Spring.
Marshall remains undefeated at 5-0 on the season with the trio of wins and next competes tonight when it hosts Renner for a doubleheader. The first of the two games is slated to start at 5 p.m.
FRIDAY
Marshall 2, Paynesville 1
Cannon Craigmile tossed a complete game for Marshall on the mound, limiting Paynesville to one run on one hit. He struck out six batters while walking five, and also finished with a double and a walk as a batter.
The third inning gave Marshall all the offensive production it needed to claim the win. Eli Weedman led off the frame with a double and advanced to third when Noah Frazee reached on a double. From there, an Ethan Boeck sacrifice fly scored Weedman for the go-ahead run and Frazee scored on a passed ball to give Marshall a 2-0 lead.
Weedman finished with a double and a single for Marshall while Trae Bailey also recorded a single and a walk.
Paynesville scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but that was their only run of the game as Marshall hung on for the win.
Marshall 6, Litchfield 2
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Marshall broke the game open with three runs and never looked back. Noah Pieper singled to get on first with two outs in the frame and advanced to third on a steal and a balk. After a Bailey walk put runners on the corners, Jackson Sirovy doubled in two runs and Tyler Kraft singled in another for a 3-0 Marshall advantage.
Sirovy tied Ethan Boeck and Craigmile with a team-leading two hits in the game. Sirovy also drove in three runs.
Pieper earned the win on the mound, limiting Litchfield to one earned run on three hits and a pair of walks with seven strikeouts. Andrew Lee closed out the victory in the seventh, giving up an unearned run on one hit with a strikeout.
Litchfield scored its first run on a passed ball in the fifth, but Marshall answered in the sixth with three more runs. Craigmile and Pieper each singled and advanced into scoring position on a Bailey bunt and Sirovy singled in Craigmile. After a strikeout put two away, Kael Frana each hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1.
SATURDAY
Marshall 10, Cold Spring 6
In a back-and-forth offensive battle, Marshall’s proclivity for big innings gave it a 10-6 win over Cold Spring in the championship round.
The game was tied at five runs apiece heading into the fifth when Marshall took the lead for good. Pieper and Bailey reached on an error and a walk, respectively, and Craigmile singled in the go-ahead run with two outs. Kraft followed up with another RBI single to give Marshall a 7-5 cushion and Black retained the lead for the remainder of the game.
Craigmile and Frazee led Marshall at the plate with two hits each in the game. Frazee also had a double and two RBIs while Craigmile drove in one run.
Weedman earned the win on the mound, giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks over three innings. Raley also surrendered a pair of runs on two hits and a walk over one frame, while Frazee earned the save after giving up one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts over three innings.
A Weedman double and a Sirovy walk set the table for Marshall in the top of the first. With one out, Piper grounded out to drive in the game’s first run, Bailey singled in another and then scored himself on a Frazee double to make the score 3-0.
Cold Spring tied up the game with one run in the second and two more in the third. Yet, the Tigers regained the lead in the fourth. Frazee and Craigmile started off the inning with a pair of singles before Frazee scored when Cold Spring committed a throwing error on a Kraft bunt. Weedman also laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the Tigers a 5-3 cushion, but Cold Spring responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retie the game.
Boeck scored in the sixth when he doubled and went home on a Frazee ground out. An inning later, Kraft and Frana walked and Keynan Coequyt singled to load the bases, and a Boeck walk and a Sirovy sacrifice fly made the score 10-5.
Cold Spring scored a run on an RBI single with two outs in the second, but left the inning with two runners stranded and Marshall maintained its lead for the win.
VFW ORANGE
BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Marshall VFW Orange baseball team dropped its first game at the Brookings tournament over the weekend, falling 8-7 against Sanford White in 10 innings, but redeemed itself with a 3-2 win over Luverne and a 9-5 win over Jackson to finish fifth at the tournament.
Marshall moves to 4-2 on the season after the weekend’s results and next hosts a tournament at Legion Field on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers are slated to take on Albany and Moorhead Gold on Friday, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. and the second at 5:30 p.m. From there, they’ll take on Renner at 9 a.m. on Saturday followed by another game against an opponent yet to be determined.
FRIDAY
Sanford White 8,
Marshall 7
Regulation wasn’t enough to determine a winner in Marshall’s tournament opener against Sanford White on Friday. The teams were tied at five runs apiece through seven innings, and were tied at six apiece after eight, but Sanford outscored Marshall 2-1 in the 10th to earn the win.
Marshall started the top of the 10th strong. With Brendan Price starting the inning on second, Issac Roberts walked and Jaxsen Bednarek singled to load the bases with no outs. Carson Mensink drew another walk to push across the go-ahead run, but an infield fly and a double play ended the Marshall rally without any further damage.
In the bottom of the frame, Sanford got a leadoff RBI single to tie the game. A hit batter and an intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs, and Sanford got a sacrifice fly to walk off Marshall.
Jack Bly led the Marshall batters with three hits for two RBIs in the game. Bennett Graven also contributed a single and three walks while Mensink and Sam Regnier each finished with a single and two walks.
Mensink gave Marshall a go-ahead run in the eighth with an RBI single, but Sanford matched in the bottom of the frame to keep the game going deeper into extra innings.
The Tigers trailed 2-5 heading into the sixth inning, but walks to Regnier and Mensink and Roco Rignell was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Another pair of walks to Charlie Moline and Graven drove in a pair of runs and Bly singled in the tying run that eventually forced extras.
Bly threw the first seven innings for Marshall, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Rignell was charged with the loss after giving up two earned runs on three hits and four walks over two innings.
Sanford scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first, but Marshall answered with Bednarek drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second to tie the game and an RBI single from Bly in the third to give Marshall a 2-1 lead. Still, Sanford responded with two runs in the third and another two in the fifth to recapture the lead.
SATURDAY
Marshall 3, Luverne White 2
A complete-game pitching performance from Mensink and some timely hitting down the stretch allowed Marshall to eke out a 3-2 win over Luverne White at the second day of the Brookings tournament.
Marshall took the lead in the fifth to break up the scoreless tie. Mensink led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Rignell double. A steal and a wild pitch then allowed Rignell to give Marshall a 2-0 lead with two outs in the inning.
Mensink threw all seven innings for Marshall, giving up one earned run on four hits and a walk. He also struck out six batters on the day, and drew three walks at the plate.
Moline led Marshall with two singles while Rignell recorded the team’s lone extra-base hit.
Luverne got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Marshall brought back its two-run cushion in the top of the seventh when Mensink walked, advanced to third on a Moline single and scored on a passed ball.
Luverne scored in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice and loaded the bases on a hit batter with two outs, but Marshall got a ground out to third to leave the tying and go-ahead runs stranded.
Marshall 9, Jackson 5
A five-run fifth inning helped Marshall surge past Jackson in its Brookings tournament finale on Saturday, with VFW Orange claiming a 9-5 victory.
The Tigers held a narrow 3-2 lead over Jackson heading into the fifth when the offense exploded. Bly and Grant Lingl were hit with consecutive pitches and Peyton Beek reached base on an error to give Marshall its first run of the frame.
Roberts was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Bednarek and Mensink walked consecutively to each push across a run. With two outs, Moline also reached on an error to score two more runs and give Marshall an 8-2 lead.
Moline, Mensink and Bednarek each had two hits in the game, with Moline contributing a double and a walk and Mensink walking twice. Graven drove in a game-high two RBIs with a double and a walk.
Graven earned the win on the mound for Marshall, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and seven walks over 4 2/3 innings. Lingl picked up the save after holding Jackson without a run, hit or walk over 2 1/3 frames, striking out five batters.
With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Bly grounded out to score Mensink for the game’s first run. A Mensink single and a Moline double also set the table for Graven’s two-run double in the third to give Marshall a 3-0 edge, but Jackson scored two runs in the fourth to get back into the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jackson scored another three runs to cut Marshall’s lead down to 8-5. Still, Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to score Lingl in the sixth and Lingl was lights-out on the mound to secure the victory.
